To explain what I mean, I generally don't have an interest in the manga that drag on for 20+ volumes...money, for one, but also the fact that the stories tend to go nowhere after a while from what I've read.

So are there any good manga out there that are, in total, 10-15 volumes or less? Just to give an idea of my favorite genres, I enjoy fantasy, mecha, and sci-fi.

Wow, I worded this like a newb post. And I'm sorry about that, but any recommendations would be appreciated.

Well suggestions are especially hard but . . .

Here are some series I enjoyed (that are also short):

(title, vol #, notes, genre)

Blame!, 10 vols, beautiful art but not a lot of dialogue, sci-fi

Solanin, one vol, seriously if you haven't checked this out do it now, I suppose slice of life (I know not listed in your likes)

Venus Versus Virus, 8 vols, one of my more bizarre choices call it a guilty pleasure, fantasy

Pet Shop of Horrors, 10 vols for the original and 6+ vols for its sequel Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo, engaging read even though the chapters could be read independantly, fantasy

Ghost Hunt, 9+ vols, most realistic ghost hunting manga I've read with creepy art, fantasy

Nightmare Inspector, 9 vols, fun read that centers on a dream eating demon, fantasy

Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro, 2+ vols, 4-koma styled work that is odd to read at first but loveable, fantasy

Rurouni Kenshin VIZBIG edition, estimated 9 to 10 vols in this format otherwise it is 28, VIZBIG edition = 1 vol holds 3 vols of a regular manga really good samurai-type story, action/historical-sort of

Old Boy, 8 vols, best revenge manga I have ever read hopefully you are a mature reader for this one, action

Diabolo, 3 vols, very good ending, supernatural/fantasy

I think this is enough for now. Let me know if anything seems off base or if there is a style you prefer more. (I've found that suggestions aren't always on the mark.)

In regards to suggestions that fall under the genres that you listed I would suggest Blame, Noise, Pluto, and Grey (ha, all one word titles). But I'd also suggest (even though it doesn't fall into those categories) Bitter Virgin, it's short and it's sad.

I was just gonna suggest that, but I'm not sure if the thread starter might like it. I liked it, but a few people I know (who are into similar genres as the starter) thought that it was a manga-version of a bad daytime drama Anime cry In any case, you might want to give it a shot because the story is nicely done.

Chikyu Misaki! It's three volumes and perfect for a winter reading session. Remember those awesome animated movies like The Iron Giant? Sure, this manga hits every cliche in the book, but you can't help but love it.

Other series I recommend:
Chrono Crusade (Completed, 8 volumes)
Immortal Rain (Unfinished, 9 volumes so far)
Suikoden III (Completed, 11 volumes)
Five Star Stories (12 volumes so far, I think, but the English version splits every tankobon into three books...)
STONe (Completed, 2 volumes)
To Terra (Completed, 3 volumes)

I didn't think Bitter Virgin was licensed (at least the encyclopedia doesn't have an English company listed).

The thread opener didn't specify his location and/or asking for North American English edition anyway. Razz

By the way, methinks the thread opener would not be interested to the majority of suggested titles listed in this thread.

True, but usually if someone is recommending a non-English edition in an English speaking forum they make a note of it, instead of assuming that someone who has made no claims about being able to read Japanese can do so.

Bitter Virgin was just a secondary suggestion, based only on the fact that he was asking for short mangas. My main suggestions are still Blame, Noise, Pluto, and Grey because they are all short sci-fi mangas like the starter asked for. But I still think that the starter should give Bitter Virgin a read simply because it was a very well done manga.

I second Chrono Crusade. It's my favorite manga, and it fits nicely into the sort of genre you like to read (it's a fantasy, supernatural shounen adventure with a bit of sci-fi and alternate history thrown in, as well). Plus, well, the art is great and easy to follow (particularly in later volumes), the characters are memorable, and there's a good balance of comedy and drama. The only thing I'd say against it is that the last two volumes are a little rushed, so some of the exposition gets muddled and lost in the shuffle--not bad enough that you can't figure out what's going on, but confusing enough that it might take a reread or two to figure out some of the backstory of the characters and their motivations.

Kannazuki no Miko is only 2 volumes - note that it is yuri!

Sola is only going to be 2 volumes.

DearS is 8, Rozen Maiden is 8 (although the ending was disappointing), I'm fairly certain that Rosario + Vampire and Chibi Vampire are going to be 14. Paradise Kiss is 5. The manga version of Eureka Seven is only 6 (8 if you count the 2 "extras").

Higurashi: When They Cry may end up long, but each "arc" is only supposed to be 2 volumes (as far as I know) - so that's a complete story.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but many of CLAMP's series seem to go no longer than 20 volumes, and they generally dabble in sci-fi/fantasy stuff. In the future I may look into their back catalog.

Wasnt planning on popping in on this thread but then you mentioned CLAMP. Chobits is like 7.6 volumes long and is very good IMO. It's a fusion between SciFi, romance and comedy with a modicum of ecchi humor thrown in there.

Actually a good number of Clamp series that I have read have gone no longer than ten volumes actually. And then there's some of them where they're only one volume series, as in collections of one shot manga stories that they might have done.
