Hello everyone,

Let me start out by saying thanks in advance for anyone who helps. I have recently found Manga in my life and I am loving it. But I have a minor problem....

I am a horror fan like no other. I own more than 2000 horror dvd's, and love everything horror. I really need some advice on good horror/scary/haunted manga stories. I am currently reading :

Deathnote
I luv Halloween
Gyo
Parasyte
Uzumaki
Lullabies From Hell
The Dark Goodbye

I am really enjoying Manga, and wish I had found it sooner! So any help on Horror or Spooky series would be much appreciated. There is nothing too gory or too scary in my opinion so just shoot out the names of titles and that would be amazing Smile

Thanks in advance once again everyone, from one huge horror fan to another Smile

You could try Higurashi no Naku koro ni. It's a little weird and I still haven't figured out what's going on. Well to me, it seems like the a murder mystery that is retold by different points of view.

I second this one. It really has proved to be a scary process, with plenty of suspense on top of the cuteness factor. One I would say you have to read is Higanjima, although I don't think this one is available yet in the States, so it might be a while.

Petshop of Horrors might be a good one.
It's a bit like gremlins where you're given a pet by Count D with 3 stupid easy conditions to keep it, and yourself, alive.
Not every chapter is a horror based chapter, some are much more light hearted, but a lot of weird and rather grotesque and horrifying things happen within the series (spoiler[man eating rabbits? check. eating through other man eating rabbits to be born? double check]).
It also has a 4 episode OVA that pretty much goes verbatim from four of the manga chapters.

Its a mystery/horror series and if you're willing to go with not horror in it every so often, you should find yourself pleased.

The Drifting Classroom is a classic horror manga. It's a bit difficult to get a hold of, but based on what I've read of the first 4 volumes, it is most certainly a horror manga.

Dragon Head is another horror that uses school aged children, a bit older than Drifting Classroom's though. A class goes on a field trip and while the train is passing under the tunnel, some doomsday thing occurs which kills most of the kids on the train (except the main characters, obviously). I've only read the first 4 or 5 volumes (once again, using my library), but some rather strange things happen in the series. It's a mix of horror and psychological here. Its been a while since I've read it, but I most certainly remember it as being horror and being good.

Museum of Terror, a collection of short stories by Junji Ito. The first two volumes cover the Tomie story, which drags on a little here and there. The third volume contains stand-alone horror stories.

Mail, horror stories connected by theme and main character.

The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, by the same author as Mail, but wih more (morbid) humor.

Based on your inclusion of Death Note and Parasyte, I am led to believe that you might enjoy Monster, which is psychological thriller (with a freakishly high user rating) and has some horror elements mixed in with it.
From the ANN entry (cus I'm not really in the right mindset to describe its plot myself):
Quote:
When a Doctor makes the highly controversial decision to save a boy's life over the mayor's, it leads to the loss of almost everything he holds dear. His fiance, his career, his social standing. The only thing he keeps is his own feeling of self worth, knowing that he did the right thing in saving the boy, who came in first. Yet even that is threatened when he begins to learn that nothing is as it originally appeared. A trail of bloodshed pointing to the seemingly innocent child leaves him questioning even his beliefs. Whether, in the end, all lives are ever truly equal.

The main story events occur 10 years after he saves the kid in question. It can be a pretty messed up series when you get right down to it.

Seconded. And I agreee with Monster too. There's definitely some genuinely creepy mangas that's not usually associated with horror:

Mushishi
Some of the chapters are clearly influenced by the horror-genre. The chapter "The Pillow Path" for example was pretty frightening reading.

Berserk
The majority probably know it as a dark fantasy, but I'd say there's a clear horror-influence prominent in certain areas. I wouldn't be surprised if Miura quoted the horror classics by H.P Lovecraft as an inspiration because some parts of the manga (the later parts of the Golden Age arch for example) clearly borrows elements from the epic kind of horror you'll find in The Call of Chtulhu, Upon the Mountain of Madness etc. Berserk has creeped me out more than any other title.

Wow, I have to second everything mentioned in this thread (except for Berserk, because I'm biased towards it).
- Dead End and Smuggler (both by same guy, end-of-world action horror)
- Any of DH Publishing's Hino Horror collections (master of the gruesome)
- Mr Arashi's Amazing Freakshow (rare, OOP, but excellent)
- Domu : A Child's Dream (psychological horror)
- Who Fighter with Heart of Darkness (only one story in this is horror, but quite creepy)

I third When They When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koroni). While I haven't read it yet, I have watched the anime, and it honestly has one of the most well-written plots I've ever had the pleasure of watching. It really throws the viewer in for a loop, and I found the revelations of the series quite fascinating. This was the title that got me into the horror genre, at least in terms of anime/manga. (I still can't handle the live-action stuff.)

I also second the recommendations for Monster, Dragon Head, and The Drifting Classroom.

You're probably the most well-read manga person in this forum. You always suggest a list of mangas I have never heard of.

Man, thanks everyone. I will be picking up every single one mentioned so far! ( Being 30 and having a career, I can't imagine having all these great titles and being young - not being able to afford it )

Another question if I may - but on topic. I really liked "I luv Halloween". Albeit not a Manga per-say, I liked how off the wall the plot(s) were and the graphical style as well.

Are there any manga's along the lines of let's say "The Nightmare before Christmas" 'ish ? Meaning, that style of artwork in the books and somewhat creepy and dark ?

Again, I'm loving all the help. It would have taken me years and a lot of money burned to aquire this knowledge through trial and error.

Hat's off to everyone Smile

PS - I just finished GYO Vol #1 and loved every single minute of that book!

Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service (look into Dark Horse Manga for this one) is a very good manga; not a lot of people hear of it, but it is definitely a good Horror-type manga. Seriously, read this if you must.

Berserk, is a good one, but long running (started in '89)~ guts is one of my favorite male leads in manga/anime and you'll find out why after reading the manga Wink

Death note isn't really horror by the way~ more of a thriller and psychological type manga.

Well, you already seem to have Uzumaki (which I think is quite possibly the creepiest drawn manga I've ever read) so I can't think of much more for manga.

If you want something with a Tim Burton vibe though, there's a criminally overlooked game on PS2, Xbox, PC, and XBL Originals called Psychonauts that you may want to consider if you have one of the aforementioned systems. It's also one of the funniest games I've ever played and likes to have a slick and twisted sense of humor running though its veins. Great voice acting certainly helps too. I'd only get it for PS2 if that's the only way you could get it though.
"The Milkman Prophecy" level is one of the creepiest levels I've played in a game, it all seems so normal at first....

MW is another psychological thriller from Osamu Tezuka (aka god of manga). Sure, Tezuka wrote some kiddy stuff like Astro Boy (which I do adore), but when he wrote for adults, he definatly meant it. It's quite an addicting read really and Vertical Inc. released it fairly recently.

While not a manga, but an American made comic, JTHM is commonly found in the same bookstores. It's made by the guy who made Invader Zim, except its not a kid's book. As the title implies, Johnny enjoys...well killing people. And he's pretty good at it, but his reasons are justified (if only by him, obviously, and the things in his house that have been personified, like Nail Bunny, D-Boy, and Mr. Eff). It's also filled with more dark humor than you'd like to think. It also has a sort of companion book, Squee! which follows Johnny's neighbor kid, Squee, and his adventures of horror. Invader Zim, while not horror, is a hilarious series by the same guy with the same odd sense of humor. I just have to smile when Gaz, the gamer, torments a boy for an entire episode to get him to give her a game system that she was wrongly deprived of.

Actually, there is a Nightmare Before Christmas manga. It's one volume. Not nearly as good as the movie since it's a rather straight forward adaption that doesn't take advantage of the medium, but it's nice to have if you're a fan.

I can't think of any manga series that are similar to that though... I guess D. Gray-man comes close at times, but it's a shounen series with some horror elements. It's rather long and puts a large emphasis on battles, like most shounen manga do. It's also a fun series and one of the best shounen manga at the moment, so you may want to check it out.

Okage: Shadow King (PS2) also has a distinct artstyle and it's obvious the creators liked The Nightmare Before Christmas. The gameplay is pretty bad, but the story and graphics are interesting and original.

Thanks, but I'm like a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to manga. People such as Highway Star have read way more seinen manga and I'm sure there are people who know a lot more about shoujo or josei manga than me Smile
