Spot on with the review, in my opinion. The epilogue was perfect if a little bittersweet. I also loved how Yoko came back, and the story episode they did for her.

This is the first series in ages that's had me shouting out and punching the air. And shedding more than a few manly tears. We should be thankful that there is a studio such as Gainax that is capable of re-inventing the mecha genre for each generation, which is not to say that I want all my mechas now to be spoiler[scooping up entire galaxies to use as weapons], but you know what I mean.

For what it's worth, if extras jack up the price of the DVD I'd prefer them not to be on there. Anyway, for some reason I thought this was out already. And, NOT TO IMPLY ANYTHING (so stay off my back), but I got a chuckle at remembering that when the review for volume 2 came out rightstuf was having a Bandai sale...and the advertisement was right above my 'post a reply' like it is now.

This is the manly side of mushiness, the kind of content which speaks about people who truly throw everything they have – all of their passion, their hopes, their determination, and even their souls and very lives

Take this! My love! My anger! And all of my sorrow!

I find it hilariously ironic that the sub only dvd has a dub rating.

I think that the Japanese dub was much better than the english, but the english was done very well...it just wasnt as epic as the Japanese dialogue. Anime smallmouth Still I'm waiting for the boxset!

This review precisely hits all the marks that I felt it should (although a Dub rating for a Sub only disc is... interesting?). Gainax showed everyone with Gurren Lagann how to produce a popular, favorably received, original anime these days: keep your themes consistent and simple, and stick to your guns. Gurren Lagann didn't try to be everything to everyone, it just tried to be the best, most fun, GAR mecha show it could be. It just happens that Gainax's best effort turns out to be pretty brilliant.

Loved Hynden Walch as Nia in the dub. She was absolutely perfect in the role. A shame she had to leave for personal reasons. The fact that the switch happened in between the time skip was just pure luck.

Perfect review. I crammed the last four episodes of the series into one sitting, and I think I was in a daze for most of the rest of the week. This show hits just about every note it touches on absolutely right, and I couldn't imagine it ending any other way, which is just about the highest praise I can give for any piece of entertainment. I can't wait to re-watch 27 on Sci-Fi tomorrow and get utterly blown away all over again. Very Happy

I view the ending of Gurren Lagann in the same light I view the anime ending of Mahromantic.

A bad case of the Evas seeping in and mutating a show to the point that the whole point of the deal is subverted.

It just occurred to me that both shows skip the same amount of time for their epilogues. Although, TTGL's ending was done much better in my opinion; not that Mahoromatic had a particularly bad one.

Rolling Eyes

While this is technically a review of a sub-only DVD, there's nothing wrong with Theron commenting on the dub. He's been watching the dubbed episodes on SCI FI, so why not? Besides, adding comments regarding the dub made the reviews of DVDs 2 and 3 all the more informative for people who are curious about the dub, but haven't been able to view the SCI FI broadcast.

I'm generally a dub fan, but I certainly agree with you there. The dub is good, but the Japanese track is certainly better. More "epic" is a good way of putting it. But, I will say that the dub certainly became much better once spoiler[Kamina was out of the picture]. To the point of being just about equal with the original Japanese.

Huh? Okay, you're going to have to explain that one, because this show stayed consistent in tone, attitude, and construction from the first moments through to the very end.

...how so? The series maintained its primary theme right up until its climax, and the driving force of its second half was completely resolved in its final episode. I've never seen Mahromantic, but I don't see how the Eva comparison holds up in the least.

(Gah, you beat me Key. Razz)

I'll have to disagree, I like the dub a lot, especially Kyle Herbert as Kamina, the show seems overall extremely well casted.Yuri Lowenthal is at his best in this series, handling young Simoun and older Simoun perfectly.
