You just have to encourage bad ideas, don't you, Zac? Which anime would make the best live-action movie? Jeez. I can only imagine the onslaught of horrendous entries next week. (That being said, Gunsmith Cats live-action almost writes itself.)

I did hide the fact I was a anime fan back in my madatory education years. I was in a club, but most the members didn't show or only wanted to watch shojo shows. While we did have some Final Fantasy, Outlaw Star and even a little Tenchi, for some reason shojo was usually on the list.

Sorry if this hurts anyone's feelings (I am not directing this to the fans at all, or any show in particular) but I absolutely hate shojo. I don't like romance unless the series is really well made. As I said though, I don't like trampling over people's choices, so I mean no disrespect.

Because I don't like people knowing what I do after work, only a two to three people know I am anime fan.

I believe that Cowboy Bebop could be a very engrossing film. Glossy special effects, incredible music, a cast that oozes "cool", semi-dystopian setting, with awesome fight scenes; all something that Hollywood can do very, very well. At least, it used to do all that with ease.

The only problem may be the anti-smoking lobby protesting. Definitely not something they should aim to appeal to kids.

I agree with Lianna Mills Jr. There are three different types of fans.

Hmm... action movie ideas... maybe Spiral Bonds of Reasoning, Ouran High School Host Club, or Rozen Maiden...
My little sister says Elfen Lied would make a great movie, but I think that might be too... um... difficult...

Oh! Cowboy Bebop would be a good action movie! Good idea dtm42! Smile

Wasn't expecting my answer to make the top of the column! Laughing Normally, I don't answer the Answerfans columns, but that was one question I just had to reply to.

American live-action film adaptations of anime...I can't really think of any that'd translate to live-action well except for anything that Satoshi Kon has ever done, or maybe Gungrave, Genshiken, Pumpkin Scissors, L/R: Licensed by Royalty, or any of Bee Train's "girls with guns" shows.

welly well. I'm pretty much an in-betweener too. I'm not much of an anime apparel person, nor do i make it a point to tell everyone i'm an anime fan. But i did learn the hare hare yukai dance during spring break when i was bored and i do wear my naruto headband on the last day of school (for the lulz). My friends and I sometimes have loud outbursts of animeness, but considering we're already social ignored enough to play the STD game really loudly in the middle of the cafeteria i think its fine.

Black Lagoon should be live actioned because it's made for hollywood. action, action, guns, action, more action, just a tad of storyline to make it interesting, and action

and concerning satoshi kon's works (above post) i don't think they would work because they are so abstact. Perfect blue might work. Paprika, well you shouldn't even dream about making it a live-action...

p.s. Shannon Hale FTW Very Happy

re: answerfans-- It's interesting to see the responses here. Alot of people are hiding their anime fandom. I think that because it's seen as something geeky and the conversations and explanations you have to give people who aren't fans, people just don't want to deal with it. I know I don't. While on one hand, anime fans can be very immature, they can also be quick to assume that if you are a fan too that you must be one of 'those fans', and act accordingly.

re: Anime to American film -- Monster. I think it would make a fantastic American movie. It could adapt quite easily as well IMO and could appeal to a wide audience if done properly.

I don't know, when I read this week's Answerfans, the first thing that popped into mind was that Paranoia Agent would be pretty awesome live-action.

I thought this weeks question would be obvious, Black Lagoon. get Michael Bay directing that, get an A-list cast, and your good to go.

I definitely hide my anime fandom. This summed it up best.

"Now, some people would say that I "care too much about what people think" or that if I were more confident with myself, I'd be able to show my "true colors" or whatever nonsense they want to spew. The fact remains that what other people think does matter, whether it be my friends, people I'd want to date, or potential employers. I'm not going to let a silly hobby get in the way of getting what I want out of life, even if that means I'm not wearing a Fruits Basket t-shirt every day. I think I can live with that."

It's kind of the popular thing nowadays to say it doesn't matter what people think, or that if somebody doesn't like you for who you are then you don't care...which all sounds nice in theory but in the real world, it does matter what people think of you. That is not to say you should put having people like you above all else. However, I think it is a mistake to place no value in what people think. It really will have a big impact on your life so you ought to be giving it at least some consideration.

Whenever I bring up anime to a non-anime fan they will almost always get a false impression. There is the old stereotypes of it all being porn or all being kiddie shows. There are more recent stereotypes based on Naruto, Bleach, and other highly popular shows. Then there are just the negative stereotype of fans as a result of the inversely proportional relationship between stupidity and loudness.

Anyway, even forgetting that I just don't find much point in bringing it up. 99% of the time it's just going to lead to awkward conversations. Most people really know nothing relevant about anime at best so they really have nothing to say about it. Even if I get another anime fan, we rarely have anything to talk about. There is such a massive variety of anime out there, it's really pretty rare that me and any given anime fan actually have anything in common.

I can't say I hide it, but I'm not very open about it either. When people ask I'll answer, but depending on the person I may give a more vague, socially acceptable answer. "I enjoy watching animated movies" instead of "I like anime".

I'm not ashamed of it, but it's not as if my life will get any better/easier if everyone does know. Why make things difficult for myself, right?

Back in early high school, yeah, I was hiding the fact I was an anime fan. But then I became friends with a girl who showed some interest in anime, which resulted in me sharing my passion and getting her hooked on it. After that, I started decorating my notebooks with pictures, bringing my manga to read in school, etc... I never brought it up with people, but if someone were to ask me about a particular anime (usually Cowboy Bebop or whatever else was on Adult Swim at the time), I would nod, agree that Blue Drives Monster was, in fact, an awesome song, and go about business as usual. It did gain me a few friends I might not have made otherwise, plus my first boyfriend (our entire relationship was based on our mutual love for Rurouni Kenshin... we lasted about three weeks).

Even now, my last year of college, I still won't bring it up with people. I won't deny the fact that I like anime, but for me, it's two spheres of my life that shouldn't cross. I don't wear the t-shirts, the hats, or the messenger bags. At this stage in my life, preparing to go into the "real world," I feel that I'd rather make an impression on people based on my personality than my hobbies.

I live my life as a cloistered fan even amongst my immediate family. They obviously know I watch those "Japanese cartoons," but I go out of my way to avoid doing so in front of them. Hell, I even make sure to flip away from the FUNi network whenever I'm done glancing at it during the day. I've taken enough ribbing from family members; I don't need to subject myself to any more unnecessarily. While I still hold a bit of hope that I might be able to introduce a few of my family members to the reasons why I love this medium, until that day comes, I'm content with doing my anime-watching behind closed doors.

Definitely closeted anime fan. No one at my university knows that I'm in the anime club or have a giganto shelf of manga.

Also, on the Nausicaa thing - using a "k" wouldn't even be purist, or whatevskies. Purist would be "Naushika"...which is lame.

In regards to hiding fandom, I think of all of the people who profess "hiding fandom", I think Danny M.'s response is about the only one that truly represents an actual hiding of fandom. He still watches anime, listens to music and other activities, but does his best to not reveal these to the general public and "restricts it to his online persona".

I'd like to expand on this, as I don't really see this attitude as actively hiding fandom. I see it as maturity. There's a right time and place for everything, whether it's your hobbies/personal life or professional life. Just because I don't have Gundam models on my desk at work, or take advantage of the very liberal dress code to wear anime t-shirts, doesn't make me less of a fan or anything like that. I don't work for an anime company. I still try to dress professionally without sticking out like a sore thumb. Even when I'm out with friends, I typically wear button downs rather than anime or computer t-shirts. It's just not my style.

Hobbies can help define who you are but, like a lot of things, they don't have to solely identify who you are. I think when you get to that sort of level, where you have only one thing to define you, that's where the negative stereotypes can affect you most.
