TOKYOPOP still alive?? Figured DJ Milky would've run the company into the ground considering that all they produce now is Princess Ai and a severely edited Gothic Lolita Bible.

Mirai Nikki!!! (or Future Diary, I guess). I've been wanting to read that for a long time. As much as I dislike Tokyopop and am kind of wary about starting one of their series in case they might get canceled, this should be cool (and the first two volumes released in two consecutive months, no less!).

I have a mixed reaction to this.
HOLY CRAP YES @ Mirai Nikki!
...Ehhhhhh @ Tokyopop getting it...
Dark Horse, Viz, or hell, virtually anyone would be better.

I'm surprised that I don't recognize any of the aforementioned new titles, but somehow that makes me so intensely happy!
Can anyone tell me more about any of them?
The only one I saw with a summary was Future Diary, which sounds good-- I'd just like to know what the others have to offer, as well. Also, it does the heart good to know TP isn't down and out for good; some of the companies have gotten me really worried this year... and I was already so exceedingly depressed when I heard Off*Beat and My Cat Loki won't be concluded.

Meh, Mirai Nikki is a title that had gotten my attention just on premice so I actually looked into it through scans, but after reading 20 some chapters I'd say it isn't exactly good. There are some good moments early on, but eventually the manga starts confusing itself more than the audience and gets pretty irritating to read. The story is a bit of a poor man's (very very poor) Higurashi. It might be a bit thrilling and have some pretty sick moments but once the storyline gets out of the writer's hands so does the reader's enthusiasm. Which is sad because through the first few chapters it looked like the plot could actually be the best part of this gore filled manga. I stopped following this a few months ago and I think even the original scanslators quit the project.
I think somebody needs to license Franken Fran. That is a title with some gore that really seems like it is worth following, even without a linear storyline.

I don't recognize any of these, I'll check them out more later. After all, the more manga the better, right?
Oh and Tokyopop can't die until they finish Life and Fruits Basket (the only two series I follow from them so far)
edit: Future Diary sounds pretty interesting, has anyone heard of it or read scans before?

Agreed. And DNAngel. Don't forget DNAngel. Even though I've started just following the scanlations at this point, I'd like to have it in actual book form, too.

Yeah, I'm surprised to hear this news as well given that they just cut all those other titles. I guess Tokyopop is convinced these have better sales potential. At least they're on the right track here since all of these titles are, well, Japanese.

TRSI has been having their semi-annual TP sale for about 2 weeks-ends midnight 10/12. 48 pages of 50 listings per page makes about 2350 volumes of manga up for sale.
Don't call that dead by a long shot.
Matsumoto & Higuri are yaoi. Gorgeous Carat has been on the non-explicit side. I have the Japanese vol of Matsumoto's & there's a bit more going on. If the art looks familiar, she's the Kyo Kara Maoh artist. It's a schoolboy in love story. Gorgeous Carat has 2 titles out already-Gorgeous Carat & DMP's Gorgeous Carat Galexy. It's about a jewel thief (Noir) who buys a young man (cousin as I recall) because the bishie's noble family is strapped for cash. THe story so far is I don't think they've consumated their relationship & are more in the uke not wanting anything to do with the seme, but it has probably been a couple years since the last volume of the other titles were released here. They went to the Middle East where Noir's mentor kidnapped the uke, doped him up on heroin, etc.
DNAngel has been on hiatus in Japan & only started up again earlier this year. Not TP's fault the artist dropped it for awhile.

Maybe a bit more Higurashi Kai than the original...But I think it's a bit more comparable to Death Note, or a combination of the two.
I really enjoyed it. Much more for the absurdity and sheer sinister attitudes some of the characters bring to the table, than wanting to see how the game ends.
It definitely does trail off after a while, but this is definitely one of the most enticing Tokyopop releases I've seen in a while (I'm still wary, ever since the Kino no Tabi incident.)

The Matsumoto title is, according to Baka manga updates, a spin-off of a prior TP title-Just My Luck- & is 2 volumes.

I wonder why no fanfare in licensing announcements? Normally, companies want to toot licenses to help generate buzz, not just quietly release them so that they have to be discovered in a search on Amazon.

This would hardly be the first time licenses got leaked this way. There should be an official announcement coming soon. All of this titles are for Spring/Summer '09, anyway. There's plenty of time to generate some buzz.
