Good review, but does it really need the massive spoilers in the third paragraph? Granted, it's been a while since I read the novel, but I don't remember those details being laid out at the beginning of the story. You're ruining a lot of the major revelations for potential readers.

I actually read the last chapter of mystery novels so I can get the "feel" of it before I commit to continue.
Anyway, out of all the spin-offs, this one interests me simply because it's a murder case set in L.A. There aren't that many epic case stories anymore where detectives chase down suspects in the City of Angles like in Dragnet or those action flicks in the 80's (not to mention the rad music). Maybe I just tune it out when it comes to the real news here. Boulevard of broken dreams and no ice cream. |

Oof! I just inadvertently spoiled myself there.
Maybe I should have been a little more prepared for that(?), but I very much was not. Oops. ^^; I like the DN manga, and while I haven't finished collecting that, I was considering buying this just 'cause the book is so dang pretty. (Which, btw, I enjoyed reading about the presentation of the novel in the review--I didn't realize there were any illustrations in the book, for instance.) I, uh, might not buy it now, knowing what's gonna happen and all, but then again maybe I'll just wait until I'm done collecting the series proper. Ah, decisions... |

UUh...Raymond Chandler?! Sure he's a bit of an oldie, but you won't find a better mystery writer (maybe Dashiell Hammet). And it's all LA. |

Yeah, I'm a bit annoyed by the spoilage too, since I really wanted to read the review of this novel. I really enjoyed the first third or so of Death Note, but lost a lot of interest once it had past the halfway point (more or less). However, Misora is one of my favourite characters from the series, so I would love to read more about her.
I have to agree, from seeing this book on store shelves that it is just beautiful. Though it is of course a bit pricey because of the high production value. |

It was definitely one of the best spin-off novels I've read. And I love detective fiction, this one really had me! I had heard great things about NISIOISIN but he was everything and more. I just picked up his first novel in the Zaregoto series, can't wait to read it!

Wow. Way to spoil one of the biggest plot points in a MYSTERY novel.
That said, I did really enjoy this book, and am looking forward to the first Zaregoto novel, waiting on my shelf. |

I read reviews in order to help decide if I want to purchase the subject matter. If the review tells me nearly the entire plot, then there's really no reason for me to do so, especially if it is a mystery plot. And, since I am a Death Note fan, I was looking forward to this; well, I'm not anymore. Thanks for the spoils (not).

Few things irritate me more than people whining about spoilers, but if it's that big a deal I'll edit whatever you're complaining about out of the review.

Whining? I am in my 60's and retired from a library position, so I believe I've read a few reviews in my lifetime and can speak to what I personally believe are spoilers when I read them. Sorry to have annoyed you though. I guess I will have to stop reading reviews from this site, that is probably the best solution. |

I don't think it should be considered whining when a review gives away almost the entire mystery of a mystery novel, except for how the main character eventually figures it out. Not know exactly what is going on and trying to figure it out on your own is the whole point of the mystery genre and for those who read the unedited review, that is an experience they will no longer get to have. Which significantly decreases the appeal of the book to the point where it becomes even more marginalized to Death Note fans who are willing to read it despite knowing what's going on.

Wrong. spoiler[Beyond Birthday has Shinigami's eyes for no explained reason. Also, Mello despite not being an omniscient narrator and explicitly stating that BB never told anyone he had the eyes still seems to know he had them.] Anyways, I found this novel rather weak even putting the aforementioned holes aside. L's actual appearance at the end of the novel was extremely stupid. spoiler[He just shows up out of nowhere to randomly attack Naomi for no conceivable reason and she doesn't even have him arrested for it.] |

Well like they say: it's the journey that counts, not the destination. Sure the review may've spoiled y'all a little about the conclusions, but the fun is in reading the rest of it that leads to the conclusion.
So Death Note: Another Note wasn't written by Tsugumi Ohba? And it's still good? That sounds pretty nice. One wouldn't normally expect these things to work out. Is it in official Death Note canon, sanctioned by Ohba? |
