My worst anime dvd purchase was Samurai-X movie and Evangelion Volume 1, and Ikki Tosen which has way to much fanservice.
What are your mistakes that you made.

I have quite a few which I regret:
First, the Ranma 1/2 series. I didn't regret this at first, but over time I just didn't wanna watch it anymore and I don't quite feel I got my moneys worth in the end. At least here I enjoyed them for quite a few years before they fueled a trip to Suncoast.
Second Escaflowne boxset. I was really expecting more from this series than I got, I watched it all the way through and I just didn't care for it. I sold it pretty quickly. I feel bad cus I rushed out to buy the thing then ended up hating it. And it wasn't on sale or anything either.
Thrid, Saint Seiya boxset 2. This was mostly dumb because I figured I'd always get boxset 1 eventually, but eventually never came, so I sold this one too after having it collect dust for more than 2 years. Now I'm more careful about getting 2nd sets of things without guarentee of a first set, even if the 2nd set happens to be $20. I didn't even watch this one because I was waiting to watch the first set.
Next up: Tweeny Witches. This happened just a few days ago. I liked it at first, but then I felt the main character and story begin to spiral into a big save the animals (faries) fest. Sure it was only $10, but that $10 could have gone towards a Cowboy Bebop set. I kinda wish I had seen more of this series online before deciding to get the DVD on a whim. I might have actually liked the show too, a shame.
Lastly, I'm actually starting to regret the DBZ season purchases because the likelihood of me seeing them again seem rather...low. Since I have manga 16-25, I won't get anymore seasons anyway, but given the sheer length of the show and how al ot of episodes are padded out with breathing and fighting filler, I doubt my patience if it were to come to watching them again. I like the show and these boxsets are certainly the best way to get them cheap and uncut, I just don't see using them again anytime in the future (lets say 3 years). I got seasons 1-4. I'll keep my mana though.
Basically, my lessons here are that getting things on whims rarely works for me. It has twice in recent memory for Welcome to the NHK and Phoenix, but considering I got both Escaflowne and Tweeny Witches on a whim and didn't like them, I've learned to be a lot more educated before rushing out to get anything new. Same thing happens for games sometimes too, except they can be more pricey making it even more annoying.

In my naive youth, I picked up a copy of Urotsikodoji: Legend of the Overfiend back before I even knew what 'Hentai' was... We only have a limited selection of anime on sale here in the UK, and it was cheap (around £5, so roughly $10).
Boy, I wish I'd researched that one beforehand. Would have saved myself a bundle in therapy sessions

My worst anime purchase wasCorrector Yui. I only got it because it was on sale, but I regret getting it.

I'm someone who frequently (if I have the money) buys as much of the series as possible at one time, just in case it goes out of stock etc (bad experiences getting manga volumes).
Either I just like any old crap, or I get lucky as so far there has only been one thing. That was the entire season of Robotech the macross saga. I had never seen it, and thought for the price (either £11 or £17) 36 episodes was ok, a chance to see one of the oldies.
Alas, without the nostalgia (and being a Brit) it was just too painfully 80s style. I forced my way through the first volume of 8 episodes, but the last four discs look set to remain forever untouched.
I mean come on, a girl goes back into a warzone because she left her diary there and someone might read it

I'm trying to recall any DVD purchases I've regretted, and I honestly can't come up with any. Only buying what you've already seen has its benefits.

Right now i would probably say Doomed Megalopolis, a 4 episode OVA DVD set that I didn't realize only had the Dub on it... which is pretty much the next worst thing to unlistenable. I haven't even finished it and will probably try to sell it on ebay soon before trying to acquire the hybrid version (which only released a year after the Dub-only version, go figure).

My worst purchases were Black Cat Vol1. and Fate/Stay Night Vol1.
I bought Black Cat because I am new to anime and I was looking for an action title. The trailer was very well done so I bought the first volume. It was so filled with poorly executed clichés that I really couldn’t enjoy it. I don't mind clichés but things happened in those episodes because that was the cliché, not because the scene earned it. It got tiresome when it happened over and over again and the action wasn’t good enough for me to overlook it.
I bought Fate/Stay Night for the same reason and because I liked the production values and Saber’s character design. However, I hated Shirou and I could not understand why the show kept making rules and then immediately breaking them. (Rin makes it clear there are to be no civilian witnesses to battles and then immediately saves one. IIlya and Rin establish that they intend to kill the other masters for success but Rin saves and HELPS one and IIlya walks away when she has 2 masters at her mercy and on and on.) It was just too much for me and the clumsy info dump in episode 3 along with Shirou’s stupid behavior didn’t help either.

I bought Debutante Detective Corps for $3 from an ADV clearance sale... and it was too much to pay for it. Why a single half-hour OAV needed a cast of half-a-dozen who're introduced with on-screen text, only to never have that that info come up again, is beyond me. (I'm assuming they intended to make more at some point.) I justify that one with my other $3 purchase from the same sale, Grrl Power!- which actually was a fair bit better than I expected it to be. "Now that I've seen it, I know Id've paid $6 for this fer sure, so that's like this crappy one here was free!"
Runner-ups are Doki Doki School Hours vol. 1, Jubei-chan season 1, and Animation Runner Kuromi. I picked up Kuromi and Jubei-chan after having seen & loved Fruits Basket becuase they were from the same director... they weren't bad, nessecarily, but not as good as I expected based on Fruba. (This is how I learned same staff does not nessecarily mean you'll like it.) To be fair, I did like Jubei-chan at first... I grew to hate it as the show progressed and our heroine never does just suck it up and accept the stupid eye-patch! How many times must someone threaten the lives of your loved ones to get through your thick head?!? *pant pant*
Doki Doki School Hours I got for $2. I don't actually remember any character names but the lead... just the stereotypes they embody. Which is fine, since nobody had any depth beyond the gimmicks they were playing, so anyone's who seen it will know excactly who I mean when I say 'big-breasted pedophile' or whatnot. It wasn't 'I wasted my money' bad, but it sure as heck wasn't good!

Pretty much the only things I regret buying were the Avenger collection (shiney tin or not, it was cheap for a reason), and I bought all 12 of the Gundam Seed Destiny DVD's Because I hoped it would get better, since I liked Seed so much. It didn't....
My biggest regret though isn't a purchase, I ended up selling over half my collection a couple years ago when my then live-in girlfriend lost her job and I needed some quick cash to pay the bills. Vandread, Noir, X, and several other titles went to a local gamestop for around 100 bucks...

Mine would be Arcadia of my Youth. I got it because I remember that it was very cheap and it hardly ever actually find any anime at an actual store so I bought it on a whim because I had seen the Harlock parody in Excel Saga just a while back and figured I might as well check the real thing. I did like it much and having watched it rather late at night I nearly fell asleep during the great climax, in fact I may have actually slept for a few minutes which attests to my lack of interest in the movie.
But it allowed to enjoy Excel a lot more the second time around so I guess all is well.
The other would be Gantz volume 1. I actually enjoyed the episodes contained in the disc and later watched the entire series only to realize that I did not care enough to actually purchase the other DVDs.

Wow. I really don't have many...or any...big regrets, but then I'm EXTREMELY cautious about purchases. I've bought things I haven't watched before, but only if they're discounted, and even then I research them out the wazoo to see if they're good because with very few exceptions, (Evangelion, Hellsing, long-running shonen titles) I agree with popular opinion.
I guess the dumbest thing I own is Steamboy. But it was four dollars, and it was worth four dollars. Also, the Cat Returns was very good, but I'm not sure it was worth the $27 I paid for it initially.
Perhaps I'll make more screwups with a few more years of collecting.

Doki Doki: The poor, poor man's Azumanga Daioh. I picked up the first two volumes to fill out my order for RightStuf's 25 for $100 sale.
For me, I'm gonna have to go with volume 1 of Samurai Gun. I should have realized sooner that the premise wasn't going to work to start with, but I did learn the important lesson to not use only trailers to make my purchases.

I'm sort of wishing that I'd waited to buy the box sets for Fullmetal Alchemist so I wouldn't have spent as much money as I did on the singles. It's a good series, but in the end I don't think it's worth as much as I paid for it.
Other than that, though, I don't have any regrets on purchases; the only things I've ever bought blind are Arjuna and Haibane Renmei, and I love both. I usually check stuff out on Netflix before I spend money on it anyway.
