I just picked up With the Light vol 1 and 2 this weekend and I cannot say enough good things about it! I was just happy to find anything about mental health in Japan but I was really drawn into it by the time I had finished reading the first few arcs in vol 1. Its very informative, providing a lot of information about the disability as well as links. I could relate to many of the stories as a close family member. It's a little over dramatic at times but I found it a great read.

From personal experience from anyone that has read the series, how accurate would you say the manga is at representing the treatment of mental health and disabilities in Japan? Has anyone else read With the Light yet?

I've read volume 1 and I really like it. Nice, clean artwork and I found the story to be very engaging; I love seeing Hikaru grow up-- he's so cute. I don't know how much it relates back to the mental health situation in Japan, but I love how Hikaru's autism was portrayed in a sensitive and positive light. My only complaint (and it's a minor one) is how while time goes on, Sachiko never seems to age. Kinda bugs me. Anime hyper

I've read the first volume back when it release in October and haven't really been searching for the second. I was excited to hear someone brought it over back when I first knew about it as Hikari to tomoni and when I was browsing an issue of Previews, I knew I had to buy it.

It isn't just the thought about mental health in Japan that makes it interesting to me, it's the overall look at the disability altogether that I like about it. People's reaction to Hikaru, the challeges he faces, and just the overall tone of the book is what made me lover the first volume and I'll look for the second next time i'm at a store.

I found the first volume at the library last week but I haven't gotten the chance to read it yet.

Glad to see there are other people out there that have read this. I've read it and enjoyed it as my sister has been studying for her PHD in child psych, and talks of nothing but autism. I think that it's great that it's being brought over here in a form that can make the disability understandable to people. I really like what the series has to say about autism and how people should react and treat it. It's really informative to the observer, but also to someone who has to interact with autistic people. Some of the things the mother comes up with I NEVER would have thought of. Overall, it's a sweet story that incorporates some very important and meaningful facts about a very misunderstood problem. I really like it. Anime smallmouth
