We really need the anime adaption equivalent of the live-action Snow White that bombs so hard that it spooks companies into cancelling all future live-action adaptions.

I think what bugs me the most here is adding the “I’m going to find out what happened to my parents” business. I guess since it’s a western-produced show, you have to have a Puzzle Box, because nobody will watch big-time streaming drama if there’s not a goddamn Puzzle Box, because apparently nothing else in a narrative will hold anyone’s interest.
I hate it because not only does it shortchange making a strong enough story to stand on its own two legs, but also because these Puzzle Boxes are rarely if ever satisfying, and they tend to rely on convoluted conspiracies… and after 20+ years of this stuff, we’ve raised entire generations convinced they see conspiracies everywhere IRL where they don’t exist, which is part of why all this (waves hands around) has gotten as bad as it has. |
