Onimaru, a kendo prodigy who Yaiba attempts to make into his rival. He's a bit arrogant, sure, but he is otherwise minding his own business

I genuinely felt horrible for him. Right from the get go he was put through a gauntlet of attempted-murders, Humiliated, Vilified, and ultimately turned into the Villain with ZERO good reasoning.

He's literally named "ONI"-maru for Christ's sake (god bless his soul)

First off, this show has the best animation all season. Hands down.

Second, this story really is about two idiots who are too prideful to just talk out their issues, one due to his arrogance, the other due to be a literal jungle boy.

Regarding Yaiba and Goku comparison... yeah, its true, Yaiba is a Goku clone at the beginning, different from Goku however, is that Yaiba actually as a brain, so he adamps and mature and starts behaving like a normal adolescent, with all the good and bad things that come with that.

Anyways, this series its unapologetic late 80s comedy styled action manga, if you wanna a comparison, this is Ranma 1/2 with swords with the usual "We need to get to "x" place" plot structure anime loved so much at the time.

Gosho Aoyama just has a habit of writing arrogant, cocky and stubborn but still likable protags in general because Shin'ichi/Conan and Kaito are cut from that same cloth but in a different fashion

Speaking as a fan of Yaiba and Aoyama's work in general, I'm enjoying this remake immensely and it's everything I wanted so far (though I miss Ryo Horikawa as Onimaru, but Hosoyan is doing a great job)

And as unruly as Yaiba is initially, his direct inspiration Teppei Uesugi from Ore wa Teppei was even worse initially, though of course he got better over the course of the manga because character development (and speaking of Goku, voiced by Masako Nozawa in Teppei's ill fated anime adaptation)

You forgot to mention the annoying romantic interest who beats him up every five minutes.

To be fair Yaiba actually deserves it most of the time.

From what I understand they toned down some of Yaiba’s perverse behavior. He clearly likes girls after a lifetime of not seeing them, but he’s a bit more restrained than the original manga.

I didn't, that's where the Ranma 1/2 comparison comes from Cool

It was standart at the time to have the love interest to be kinda bitchy, but the MC deserving such treatment was also standar.

Yeah, in the manga Yaiba do lifts Sayaka's skirt in the airport and screams at her like a drunktard at a Strip bar when she is in the changing room, in the remake Sayaka punches him before he can lift it and the stuff he tells her is not that atrocious.

Yaiba "Cools down" after a while and so does Sayaka anyways, the series never stops being an stupid comedy, but steps away from "Hentai!, -kicks him in the face-" jokes after a while, so these changes don't affect their relationship development.

Though, I am curious of how the remake is gonna deal with the spoiler[IOnsen episode], that chapter was problematic, the old anime simply changed the setting to a water park and deleted spoiler[Yaiba's dad] from the whole series all together.

They can do it again.

Despite being an anime fan for a couple of decades at this point, I've never really engaged with Case Closed.

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen someone in the western hemisphere admit to this, I could've been a millionaire by now.

So far, this is my anime of the season. I haven't seen anything yet come close to matching the energy that Yaiba is bringing.

This looks fun but the pacing is all over the place. In less than 10 this series tries to introduce four characters who are nothing alike and pull as many jokes as possible.

Im really enjoying this one. It's a bit dated in style and tone, but then again so am I so i suppose it's nostalgic if nothing else. It's simple, but I think it's simple storyline is a strength. If you like DBZ or stuff like that and want it to go at a faster pace, you'll enjoy Yaiba. Someone else praised the animation and I concur. That's how I know I'm not watching something from 25-30 years ago.
