Given that the show is lackluster, any insight into why it's so popular in Japan? It's been consistently rating above 3% according to the weekly Japanese TV rankings ANN publishes, which is...pretty high.

Aside from the usual "people can have different tastes", it's likely also because Blue Miburo airs on Yomiuri TV in prime time (5:30 pm) on Saturdays in Japan & is in the time slot that My Hero Academia previously ran in (& itself will be replaced with the Yaiba anime reboot), so it's a relatively popular & consistent time slot for anime.

In other words, this is NOT a late-night anime, unlike what the vast majority of modern TV anime tend to be.

Like Lord Geo said, NTV's pre-Conan timeslot is Stronk. Has been ever since it was started with Space Brothers. You'll see a number of titles in its history that were regulars on these charts, even though some of them have little or no international presence -- even Ultimate Otaku Teacher charted a few times.

  • Fall 2024: Blue Miburo
  • Spring 2024: My Hero Academia S7
  • Fall 2023: Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange
  • Spring 2023: Mix: Meisei Story ~Our Second Summer, Beyond the Sky~
  • Fall 2022: My Hero Academia S6
  • Spring 2022: Love All Play
  • Fall 2021: Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon - The Second Act
  • Spring 2021: My Hero Academia S5
  • Fall 2020: Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon

  • Fall 2018: Ace Attorney S2
  • Spring 2018: My Hero Academia S3

  • Spring 2017: My Hero Academia S2
  • Fall 2016: Time Bokan 24
  • Spring 2016: Ace Attorney

We don't talk about the preschoolers' anime that air on Saturday mornings on NHK-E either -- Curious George, Butt Detective, Shaun the Sheep -- or of course Fuji TV's massive one-two punch on Sunday evenings of Chibi Maruko-chan and Sazae-san. But the big family-friendly shows still command an audience.

Funnily enough, there is a late-night anime block now that's proven popular enough to get shows onto the Video Research charts regularly -- Friday Anime Night, also on NTV. Magilumiere wasn't a top-tier show last season, but a decent number of people still stuck around for it after watching Tangled and Alice in Wonderland and Top Gun and whatnot on Friday Road Show. Even noitaminA never charted as regularly as Friday Anime Night has.

I was really disappointed to realize this wasn't going to end at 12 episodes, and wasn't planning to finish it, but kinda just kept going. It's gotten a bit better in the second half, at least story-wise, though that's not really saying much. At least it's less of a slog to get through.

They seem to spend a lot of time in this show on character development, showing all the camaraderie shenanigans and stuff, so it's baffling to me how flat and vapid all the characters stubbornly remain in spite of that, and the fact that these are some of the most interesting and well-known figures in Japanese history. I just don't care about their drinking parties or morning wrestling matches or how they view our little white-haired newbie. And every time I might start to feel a twinge of engagement with these people, the anime ruins it with those stupidly goofy hot-dog shaped grins.

As I've apparently signed a pact with the devil that requires me to watch any and all Bakumatsu/Meiji era anime, I'm hoping this ends with 24 episodes. Please let it be so.

I can't really argue against the average and low-effort animation and direction. Compare this with the animation/direction with the Kyoto arc in Kenshin and it's night and day.

I constantly wonder how historically accurate the events in the series are...I feel like the real life Miburo were probably a lot more lethal in comparison to their anime counterparts here.

I can't say I've been "wowed" by anything but I've grown to like the cast enough. I feel like Nio is a typical protagonist but he rounds out the other Miburo to a degree. I feel like it's also picked up a lot in the second half.

I personally enjoyed the rowdy bro moments among the Miburo myself.
