I do not know why this exists. I assume someone woke up from a drug-induced coma and just wrote down what the last things he/she saw before everything went black. Then someone said "Let's make a game out of it! With the Neptunia cast". And here we are.

I feel bad. I like Compile Heart, but they just struggle to make decent games. There are some fans who argue that the changes to the game have hurt the company because of overseas alterations. However, i think the real reason is that their games continually never rise above a "its allright", at least IMO. It would be fine if they spaced their work out, bit theyve been releasing a game or two at least every year. I really wonder if they will stay alive.

Just make another main entry in the universe, for God's sake. With all the stuff that's been happening in the console wars since the last one, there are literal dozens of new things you could add to the world. Phone games becoming more and more mainstream. Micro-transactions. Always online single player games. Freaking DENUVO. The material should be writing itself at this point.

They've already done some of that. Like Sisters vs Sisters was all about a representation of mobile gaming.

On topic to this game review but incidentally unrelated to the quality of the game itself...

I continue to be utterly baffled by ANN's incredibly bizarre obsession and insistence on constantly getting reviewers to write articles about a new installment in some previously established series or franchise who know or care little to nothing, or have virtually no experience with the franchise in question, and always come off as half-awake, entirely uninterested, bemusedly unenthusiastic, and sleepwalkingly blase about having to cover said franchise in question, while spending half a sentence to shrug and go "I don't know anything about any of this franchise or whatever so I dunno if anyone else who does gets anything out of it whatever I guess."

Then this just barely cares about spending the rest of the vapid and short review rambling out a bored-sounding, breif and entirely unengaging review about something they clearly didn't care about in the first place, and expecting this is the perfect way to show their professionalism and informed critique that offers such opinions of value to the kind of person that WOULD question the worthiness of a watch or a purchase of tjhe material. And not just "i unno, whatever I guess i don't know nothin' bout no Neptunia, uh, bikes go burr, doggos have weird bodies sometimes, fun I guess, or maybe not? eh."

I feel like maybe on one hand ANN's incredibly botched attempt with doing this as often as they do with this and so many other recent reviews is to offer "fresh takes" on franchises from the perspective of an "unbiased newcomer", but none of them seem to have any of the analytical or professional critiquing skill or way with words or feelings or care for what they're writing enough to be able to handle that.

More or less the same with so many reviews here, adjusted slightly based on the individual or however that applies to a game review that someone who knows nothing about the series cared about or wanted to write, or an anime reviewer who has no experience with the franchise or the characters in a long running series and sleepwalks through the article, or manga reviews from someone who feels like they were just flipping through art in a series they're not familiar with, got bored, turned in a few jotted down notes on what they looked at and called it a day.

Like, this is just another one in a a long line of pithy, bored uninterested ANN reviews from people who aren't qualified whatsoever to properly critique anything, and have no professionalism or standards to what they're reviewing, They read like lazily extended first impression twitter threads from half-interested jaded teenagers, or short livejournal personal blog posts from bored kids from back in 2004, rather than even attempting to approach anything resembling a professional review or a critique.

For as much as people complain about sites like IGN and their low standards or reviewing or competency, at least their writers and editors put in substantially more legwork than this, or more effort than so many of ANN's recently lazy half-awake thoughts from a jaded individual who couldn't care less about having to waste their free time writing something to fill a quota that someone else in charge asked them to get around to, just to have a new block of content to go up on the site.

But honestly, I'm just well past sick of reading things like this from people who just write reviews as if it was a pain in the ass just to have to do, and the entire thing is so uninformed, un-caring, unenthusiastic, and offers nothing compelling to properly explain what something like Neptunia Riders vs Dogoos offers to fans, i.e the ones most curious about picking it up other than "I don't know these characters, I don't really get what this is meant to be but whatever, here's a screenshot, here's a couple of sentences about what you do in a general sense, here's some ramble about it being ok whatever I was half awake during it, I don't really care that much, I don't know if anyone else will, D- whatever there I wrote it, the end."

Just a legitimate question is there any reviewer here at ANN left that has any passion about anything anymore, or at least borderline knowledge of franchises they're tasked to cover or cares to do anything, or has any journalist standard higher than that of someone writing a tweet or a blog post out of boredom about things they clearly don't care about very much?

Because lately I get more information or insight googling up a Reddit post or a GameFAQ's forum post about most anime, manga or video games in question that I actually get around here for the past 5 months. And when more successful and interesting competition for topic discussions comes from googling Reddit and GameFAQ's compared to Anime News Network, I can't be the only one sensing a very real problem emerging around here.

Yes? If you think all the reviews on here, are written the same exact way. That shows you don’t actually read the reviews you’re complaining about.

Thinking that Gamefaqs and Reddit have better and more informed insight on anything is a particularly amazing take. Considering all the misinformation, whining, and just plain terrible takes and assessments I’ve seen on a myriad of topics from time to time some of which especially on Gamefaqs though it’s happened on Reddit too, can veer into some ugly shit.

Look, I don't normally respond to comments on my reviews cause I want people to be able to discuss what they feel without my direct input. That said, I feel like I need to respond to some of the things you've brought up.

Firstly, you don't have to like the review, and I don't have any illusions that I will change your mind about who I am, how I review things, or even my state of mind when reviewing things. The text has to speak for itself.

But I feel like you're pretty directly contradicting a lot of the things I typed up in the review.

Regarding expertise, we try to tap folks who are experts or have some familiarity with the topic at hand. That's not always possible, for a variety of reasons (not everything can be covered by all staff members for one, and sometimes the people best suited for a certain review might be busy with real life stuff or already have too much on their plate, it depends). I try and at least communicate my experience with a franchise or series up front so that you can know as a reader what my bias or background may be. I even said that I have played and enjoyed a Neptunia game before, so I was at least open to this going in. You might take my lack of experience outside of a single side game as a basis to disregard everything I have to say or consider me disrespectful. Personally, I think it's just my way of letting you know what my level of experience is so you can weigh my views accordingly. We can't escape our bias, so I try and be honest about my own.

Secondly, just because I wasn't invested in the cast or world beforehand doesn't mean I wasn't open to it. One of my issues with the game is that all of the girls' stories feel very, very similar. The designs are communicating these unique personalities but each of the goddesses is basically playing out the same setup each time. As a newcomer, this isn't enticing or informative, but I also can't see how this is enjoyable as a veteran either. Surely these characters all have unique traits and identities you want to see expressed. Surely they have more to offer than the same copy paste setup for each character.

And lastly, the D- isn't because I don't care or don't get it - it's because it's a $39.99 price tag for a game I finished in a single sitting. That's... not a good value proposition, plain and simple. As a reviewer of anything you have to weigh that people may watch or play things based on your recommendations. It's one thing to recommend an anime where usually the only cost is time, but people might spend money based on a game review. I was done with my playthrough at somewhere around the 3-4 hour mark, and the game's pattern had pretty much been locked in during the first hour. To recommend a game that will cost a user something like $10 an hour to play and is highly repetitive at that... maybe you would feel comfortable doing that, but I don't.

For comparison, I reviewed the recent Touhou Spell Carnival game and despite that being my first Touhou game I really enjoyed it. That's a similar...ish franchise in terms of sheer number of characters and entries with a focus on a big cast of cute girls getting into adventures. In that case, like this one, I tried to approach it as honestly and openly as I could. You win some, you lose some, such is the reviewing life. Despite my own tastes/preferences and the diverging opinions on the games in question, I never spoke down about the Touhou franchise and fans, nor did I speak ill of Neptunia or its fans. I know these series run for so long because people see something in them, and I try to see it too if I can - but it doesn't always bear out that way.

Again, you can disagree with my perspective and feel I'm not qualified to review a Neptunia game, that's fine. But I am at least up front about my experience and try to honor the readers' time and money, and to be honest with you I don't think the Neptunia Riders game is worth the asking price.

Brave of them to do a game like this, in the face of Mario Kart.
