Now, Ep8 here I don't count as a legit payoff because Kurumi has to have Yuzu do the magic in tandem while the latter claims to not be conscious of how she is doing it. Which begs the question of the source of her confidence in being able with Kurumi?

Personally I find it better payoff than if Kurumi just did magic by herself. It touches on themes of friendship and magic being something everyone should love and share, while nicely (at this point) avoiding becoming chosen one narrative.

I'd say "peeved" includes "frustrated", so if I tally up you, Princess_Irene (Ms. Silverman) and the others here and in the Forum commenting similarly, I have 6 out of 9 "peeved" and there is no guessing.

First, that would still be far too small research sample to make any definitive statement Wink

And second - I'm not native English speaker, but doesn't "peeved" mean "extremely irritated/annoyed"? It seems to me much stronger word than "frustrated" and I clearly don't feel like that, neither seems Ms. Rebecca.

While I don't think I made any definitive statements, "peeved" is usually stated to mean just "annoyed" and most people I have had contact with take it to represent a very mild form of the emotion. Now, I have a stronger reaction than that but obviously people commentating here haven't seemed to feel as strongly, which is why I used the mildest form. I'm not saying "everyone" which could be taken as definitive, which is why I don't use that as it presumes too much, but "most people" or "most everyone" as in much greater than 50%. I wouldn't debate if 66% qualifies as "most" but not sure how to accurately/unambiguously describe that.

That's interesting, we have some language barrier here then and sorry for misunderstanding. But thankfully, the series got better in last two episodes, so we can leave it be I think.

I'm at this point very happy with how the series is developing, even if middle part (before magic use) should have been 1-1,5 episodes shorter in my opinion.

No worries! This Ep Kurumi does her first legit solo spell (charm) in a very long while so the frustration is lifted. I also think there is a curious pacing/composition problem that manifests in episodes seeming to have little progress as major events happen off-screen until they are revealed. Like Ms. Suzuki leaving and then being captured and now freed while the girls occasionally muse about what happened and do relatively inconsequential things in the mean time. No one looks for her or inquires insistently and suddenly, here she is again. Confused

2 episodes left and we still have little to no information on Kurumi’s younger sibling

Episode 10. That's when she realizes that her grandma's charms and ancient magic are the same. This story thing of characters being dumb until they don't need to be dumb anymore needs to go away

That one isn't really dumb to be honest - if you grew up with something you might not really think much about it being something special, just a part of daily life.

Overall, I think positively about this anime, even if it was messy and had some thematic and pacing problems.

Personally I would cut around 1 or 1,5 episodes of "Kurumi can't use magic" part for pacing and wouldn't add that reveal about why Kurumi didn't get into magic class in last episode, because it really seems to muddle the story themes and doesn't really bring anything in my opinion.

This was a pleasant enough show. I liked the pastel colors used for effect, the storybook art style and I much appreciate a story that presents life and people as they are, not always predictable and making choices that aren't always straightforward. However, I am left wondering what the point or message was in the end.

The writer went out of their way to draw parallelism between protags Kurumi/Yuzu and prior generation counterparts Hazel/Minegenius but what I don't get is why? Apparently Kurumi's grandma was Hazel and "Miss Magician" was spoiler[Minegenius] but supposedly the latter is actually spoiler[Ms Suzuki] despite looking nothing like her? Or maybe Minegenius was supposed to be Yuzu's grandma? Either way, it seems to have no bearing on how the plot developed or what the protags did or what happened to them.

And let's not forget the passel of mysteries that got presented and not resolved. What the black miasma was, who the dog-girl really was and what the after-credits scene having her disappeared and revealing her name initials are K.M. was about? Sequel bait? If there is an S2 I'll watch, but these episodes did nothing to pique my interest.

Well, she is calling Kurimi "onee-chan", so she probably is that younger sibling that was mentioned.

K.M. are also Kurumi Mirai initials.

I'll follow you as I should also thank Ms. Silverman for her reviews being always fair, thoughtful and insightful. I was especially looking forward to what she would make of the mess the story became and it helped me frame my thoughts as well. Happy Hanukkah! Wink
