Could it be because this series began as a webtoon, his character writing for this version ends up restrained due to previous editorial decisions?
Anyway, I'm glad the novels are officially available in English. |

The concept for this series is about a group of super normal kids placed in a situation they're not equipped to handle and possessed by demons, so it's clear at least some of them are gonna go off the rails along the way.
But since they're all really normal, that does make them feel pretty flat in the early going. That coupled with Yuuma not being very insightful and maybe not even that interested in actually getting to know people; there's a degree to which his POV is flattening them even more. I don't really agree with the idea that Kawahara can't write women (he's had a few underdeveloped characters, but is more prone to having no clue what to do with them after their initial arc than doing them a disservice from the start) but it's also true that nobody in this cast is really popping off the page. (Even after the third volume.) I will argue that dismissing Aria as a mean girl is missing a few clues as to what's going on with her; she's worked out that her being nice to Yuuma makes Gamo go after him, and is intentionally distancing herself to keep the peace between the two of them. Ultimately, he's pacing this series like Unital Ring or later Accel World but not realizing that both of those had a core identity established before he started hanging every volume around a cliffhanger. The result is that even after reading the third volume, I still don't really feel like I've locked in on why this series needs to exist when he could just keep writing the Isolater, his best series. |
