Not knowing anything about the visual novel going in, I was hoping for a show similar to Plastic Memories (got to keep the onion ninjas employed), but did not really feel much when Atri got put into suspended animation in Eden 1.

I really enjoyed the anime alot but the visual novel, especially the ending of it, definitely hit much harder. It was an absolute masterpiece as where the anime is just a very excellent series.

I think there were definitely some areas (world-building, plot pacing) that were somewhat lacking but overall I enjoyed the show, enjoyed Atri, and her relationship with Natsuki (even if it was kind of surreal seeing a romantic relationship between a teen and a loli).

I agree with this review, didn't but the romance and found Atri more annoying than charming.

My very thought too. I wasn't expecting it to reach the same height as its original, just to recognize its atmosphere and i wasn't disappointed.

One of the very few anime series that I enjoyed until the last episode; your classic "leaving a sour taste in your mouth ending" shows. UGH!

I expected this to be my favourite show of summer and with the first 4 episodes that seemed a good possibility. The water world theme was amazing and up until that point I was liking the characters/ unfolding story.
But after that things became rather stale with side characters losing all of their own agency just so they could become cardboard cutouts that suddenly only talk about this potential romance of the MCs - ah good old "tell don't show" story telling!
Then in episode 7 the dynamic indeed switches from grumpy guardian vs silly kid to romance when the script requires.....and it felt incredibly unsatisfying. Let's put aside the fact ATRI looks so young, otherwise they didn't earn that development at all with what came before.
Another commenter mentioned Plastic Memories which is a great example of an infinitely better romance in which the characters actually build towards it in a meaningful way while dealing with serious conflicts to get there. Spice and Wolf is another fine example of doing it right.
I had to drop the show towards the end but maybe one day I will pick up the VN.

Yeah, a disappointing show really. I found Atri's character annoying much of the time.
I did like the setting, though. Maybe if it had had 24 episodes and spent more time on doing worldbuilding, exploring the setting and the other characters, it might have been a better show. As it was, a lot of things felt rushed.
