So this was another one where I went in with the one shop and drop expectation because the trailer screamed low budget. And let's be clear, it's pretty obvious that nobody was shelling out the big bucks for slick animation effects in this anime. But the good news is, the team is doing the best it can with an obviously low budget, like fillings skies with dramatic red visuals to make it seem like not having backgrounds was a narrative choice and using that money for making people move when they need to. Mostly. The background music is pretty decent with a vaguely operatic quality, and the voice acting isn't too shabby either. So somebody's doing their best to give this dark edged fantasy some legs, and I appreciate the effort.

The story isn't breathtaking in its originality ,but I did get a jolt at the surprise. I already had my suspicions about some things, but I thought they would take longer to develop, which is about as specific as I'm going to get. I expected this anime to start out with a weak lead already in charge of a strong clan, like Let This Grieving Soul Retire, but instead the anime seems to be taking a ground floor going up approach, and I like that.

The MC's edgelord attitude doesn't do much for me one way or another, but I do like stories about MCs trying to achieve badassery with hard work and smarts, assuming this MC demonstrates those qualities in the episodes to come..

So that's three C to C+ range fantasy anime pilots that happen to fall in my strike zone and that I'm giving a few episodes. Loner Life in Another World, Let This Grieving Soul Retire, and Now Notorious Talker.

[EDIT: Added fancy opener stuff. -TK]

Well, I guess those are the travails of a new born anime connoisseur. There's probably no perfect approach. On the one hand, while you're sitting at your cafe table with your beret looking a little wilted, sipping Bored-eaux and waiting for your foi de gras and escargot to arrive, I'm snacking on fast food fries and milk shakes. .

On the other hand, I'll probably wind up consuming a few episodes that looked fresh at first but were left out of the refrigerator for too long. I'm still at a place where I enjoy the sifting through the bargain bin part of the anime experience.

You know. Every season you get some anime that try way too hard. But I am struggling to think of an anime recently that felt this try hard.

I think that kind of laughed when he pulled out a gun while trying to explain how his "talker" trait is actually a super cool and mechanically complex class.

We also must talk the series poster with that try hard jacket, that underneath it is a sleeveless high collar shirt/sweater.

I also think he is part vampire.

@ Edjwald - exactly so. We all figure out what works for us personally, sooner or later.

I for one like a mix with a bit of everything in it. Sure, I could stick to only 4 star meals but sometimes you need that greasy (after)taste that only something of relatively low quality can provide. I also like getting introduced to a lot of series, sometimes you find something that while not all that high quality still speaks to you due to the setting/story or something else ( like Dungeon People and QA in another world).

Anyway, the first episode was interesting but left me unsure. The whole premise of the talker class being discriminated against does not make much sense given what the class can do and how valuable that is. There is also the mc who seems like an edgelord but is also very determined to succeed (potentially ruthlessly so).

It's true, you think a walking buff machine would be fought over by the guilds, like Haruhime, the fox girl from Dan Machi.

And Dusky, it's true, there's no subtlety here. It's all balls out, "This is what I'm about, let's get edgy with it!" This anime reminds me a bit of the first episode of Arifureta, The way it milks energy out of angry attitudes and tinged backgrounds and dramatic shots that linger on the edge of being stop motion anime. I think Arifureta even had a gun - I'm not sure because I didn't watch episode 2. I'll give this one at least a second episode though.

Episode 2 -

Plus: I do like me a good revenge story.

Minus: The MC's constant sneering and self-satisfaction can get pretty annoying.

Plus: I do have a fantasy jones, especially since Isekai don't seem to be the flavor of the decade anymore.

Minus: The animation is sub-par.

Plus: Watching somebody build a clan from scratch is the sort of plotline I find interesting.

Minus: There are all kinds of logical gaps like ( As mentioned last week) like the low regard that "Talkers" are held in, especially when the MCs skill list keeps growing?

Minus: I don't think there's a drop of subtlety anywhere in this anime.

So basically, all the stuff I like about this anime lie in its idea, and the things I don't like about this anime lie in its execution. That's not a good sign. If I don't find that the new cast looks interesting next week, and the quality doesn't improve next week,, I'll cut and run on the third episode.

Yeah, I am also on the verge of dropping it. It is not bad but it is not hooking me either. That is in part due to the mc being an edgelord yet not an amusing one and the whole talker aspect making less and less sense. The show wants to make the mc someone you root for due to his weak position yet his abilities very much do not match being an underdog.

Well, I did find the assassin with her strange mix of naivety and near sociopathic cynicism kind of interesting. So I guess I'll be sticking around next week after all.

Honestly, I think this anime would have been better if it had skipped the first two episodes and just started with episode 3. It would have introduced the necessary information without being as flashback heavy or info-dumped or spending all that time with dysfunctional party members who were just going to get chop blocked anyhow. We wouldn't have spent so much time with the sneering side of the MC either.

Welp, I gave this anime another chance after episode 3, but Noel's latest edgelord routine pretty much killed it. Sometimes an arsehole is just an arsehole.

That is the thing I mentioned earlier: there are different types of edgelords. I like Arifureta because the mc is an edgelord yet despite what he has been through is still a good guy at heart (not a naive one though). That show also makes fun of said edgelord actions. In the case of Talker the show tries to be very serious and Noel is never anything beyond a arsehole who tries to be edgy.
