Well about as bizarre as I would expect. Not sure how they are gonna explain the whole apocalypse thing from the first game.

Honestly, it's better not really to delve much to origins of Death Stranding - because while Kojima can provide enough entertainment with his blend of Western acting and cinematography with the wild insanity of Japanese science fiction writing, he is not really that good at making serious answers about his world building and it's fine to keep it as wacky and unpredictable as possible as his signature character naming.

I can see Sugita having fun with this character.

Who to blame, man is one of the major picks for japanese dubs of Kojima games for years (and Kojima really loves to keep the same seiyuu cast from MGS days), but not got a lot time to shine in first DS with a very minor role - but now it's a real time for him to flex again.

Huh? The first game already explained the Death Stranding Apocalypse.
If anything, critics complained that he overexplains things.
But to summarize, the Death Strandings are cyclical universe mass extinction events that always happen, akin to death for all living things. It effects matter, time and space. These extinctions are led by entities that are sort of like god-like beings who personify the event. Eventually a new recreation of life and the universe results after the extinction. Though some fear that the next extinction will be the last one.
Living beings with souls find themselves separated from their body and stranded in an in-between place, a beach. These try to find their way back through the tar black substance that seems to be the stuff that life and matter originate from, but doing so prematurely end up as Beached Thing monstrosities. Some beings like Sam can do it easily as repatriots.
The Death Stranding event that was going to happen got delayed at the end of the game as Sam talked the entity out of it.
Seems like DS2 will build on these things. And actually using the seams and beaches to traverse.

Luxu and Masuo going on a journey together. I always love the Nomura and Kojima coincidences in their games since they are good friends.
