I dunno if this was a special preview or if it's going to be on Sunday instead of Tuesday, but this pilot episode was better than I expected. I thought I was going to give it one shot and drop it, but the show's not that bad. It's not great. The animation is standard, but it wasn't bog standard. There were a few tropes, I don't think there were outright cliches.

What's mostly got me interested is that I'm not sure if the concept is as simple as it seems.

If the guild leader is a complete incompetent whose achievements are based on freakish luck and bluffing , he at least seems pretty locked and loaded with high quality magical gear, and he used it to take down that - I forget her name - female monk, maybe? who was tough enough to win the bar fight.

So is this a comedy of misunderstandings where the MC's random and impulsive decisions always seem to work out for the MC against all odds because people believe they will work out, or is this an anime about a guy who's much more capable than he pretends or believes himself to be?

Either way, I wasn't bored or annoyed and I'm curious enough to watch the next episode..

Yeah, that was pretty much my take as well. Expected to be one and done, but will be back next week, until I get overwhelmed by all the new drops. Smile

He's obviously not powerless, he just thinks his friends have left him behind in that department and wanted to bow out for their sake, but they don't listen. He also obviously wants to continue treasure hunting, or he wouldn't keep trying to join other clans incognito. And he doesn't actually seem to mind an administrative role, or feel like he's out of his depth among the clan. Then again, he didn't seem all that enthusiastic about being a hunter even as a kid, but maybe he was already sensing he didn't match their potential.

Maybe he's got crazy luck stats, like the Hero in Slime.

How did you peg her for a monk? Are we thinking of the same character? The one who looks like a catgirl without the ears or tail? In the bustier hotpants? I think her name is Tino ('cause she's tiny), and she's an apprentice to the founding member with the rabbit ears headband. So it sounds like she's already a member of the clan, so I don't know why she was making that "pick me! pick me!" face when he was supposed to recommend someone.

I think it was that flying martial arts and hardly to lightly armored look that had me thinking possible monk type ...y'know, monk as in RPG stealth fighter who tends to use bare hands or daggers or staffs, not monk as in religious hermit. .

I also think the whole rag tag dungeon party put together of competent strangers with personality problems and grudges could be interesting BTW.

That was indeed a decent first episode, decent enough to give it a few more in any case.

Mc wise I think he is actually a lot weaker than his legendary status friends. Take away the magical items that he collects and he probably can't do much of anything. That said, I think he has the same ''make the bullshit I spout into reality'' ability that Cid Kagenou has. Because of that things will work out no matter what.

Okay, I had a lot of fun with episode 2. Episode 1 was pretty decent overall, especially considering how much background it established. Now I'm mentally tagging this anime with my "Upward Trajectory" rubber stamp. If it maintains this level of energy, I'll be more than happy to stick around.

...

I still say Tino fights more like a monk.

So after spending a considerable amount of time bagging up all the relics he could find, he leaves them behind in the end? Smile

I like Krai. As weird as it is to say it, he reminds me of characters like Andy Griffith or Henry Fonda's Mr. Roberts, herding a bunch of lunatic cats who he's fond of, whose antics he finds amusing, and who respect him more than he thinks he might deserve. Krai's a bit goofier than the archetype, though he's got the outward calm part mostly down.

Pretty impressive move to just kick the sword and it bursts into flame! Thousand Tricks indeed.

I certainly find the MC more enjoyable than his counterpart over in Notorious Talker. In a way, this anime might become a lighter take on The Eminence in Shadow syndrome where a widely revered "genius" keeps stumbling ass backwards into success. Except Cid could set off magical A-bombs buck naked, and this guy is compensating for being underpowered with bluffs and magical gizmos - maybe somewhere between Batman and Iron Man in the accessorized hero department.

He is indeed a Cid light so far. Everything he says does work out but not as magically and without him having to do anything. On the other hand, it is easy to forget that Cid was/is an overpowered monster and Krai is a crafty dude with lots of gadgets.

Yeah, the 3 episode rule has been satisfied, and I'm liking this anime just fine.

Obviously Krai isn't a God, but Tino might qualify as a cult member Wink It's hard not to like her though. Loyal to her friends, idealistic, hard working, brave, etc. And Tino's ability to make events fit a narrative told with conviction seems to be influencing her party members as a kind of therapy, which is sort of cool. It's also fun to see plot armor being part of the joke instead of just lazy writing.

For me the thing that separates this from Eminence of Shadow (or even Overlord) in a positive way is that the show's abstract definition of "success" when it comes to "accidentally stumbling into success" isn't psychopathic violence. The main character himself isn't a particularly good person, but the show isn't trying to validate it.

I can't really comment on Overlord as I never got into the show, but I'm not sure Cid is capable of grasping the concept that people have some function outside being playthings for his amusement. I don't really find him likable either, but like Tanya the Evil (and possibly the new Demon Lord 2099) I do find the anime watchable because it's putting a bastard against a much bigger evil.

I don't think Kraii is a bastard. He's a grifter, but he's kind of neurotic from being trapped in the role he's playing. He has a conscience, and he's willing to put his life on the line to make up for his mistakes.

Yeah, Krai is very flawed but he is a good guy deep down. Cid on the other hand is so high on his own supply that he can not even think of others, the whole world is his plaything in his mind. As for Overlord, that mc does or allows evil things for a good outcome for most, though it does not at all excuse the horrors his group delivers.

Anyway, kudos to Tino and the gang for going beyond their limits. Krai never really intended it to be that way but the whole thing is forcing them to grow.

Overall liking the start of this series but I am hoping that Tino either becomes less one note (Master has it all planned!) or spends less time talking in this series going forward. She would make a good punchline to a joke but when she is making up the structure of the conversation it feels very one note.

The normal guy getting caught in extreme circumstances has a lot to mine from, if it is willing to embrace the desperate and silly circumstances. Like that Jetpack coat, I would of loved an actual animation of him slamming headfirst into one of the giant white wolves.

As for comparisons to Cid Kagano, I do not get that vibe for a simple reason. A lot of people see Krai for what he is instead of the bravado. He is the organiser, not the overpowered chuni that is Cid. One that is a bit self absorbed and jaded about being seen higher then he actually is, but one who manages to help just when he is needed. Cid would of just been 100% selfish and his delusions would change the world to make it work out. Krai needs to actually face the reality of this world. That is a big difference.

Still I could be wrong, this could all turn out to be another cult of personality.

It seems this series fetish is bottoms with a bit of thigh on the side.

Welp, Krai was getting ready to sacrifice himself so that his team would have a shot of survival, so that should clear up some of the speculations about his bottom line. Umm...I mean in regards to his moral makeup, not the fetish Cryten was speculating about Wink

Overall, I thought that was a fun storyline. Liz Smart was over the top, but that was kind of the point, so I didn't mind.

The blind luck that carried Krai through wasn't too impossible. If you screw up and walk in the opposite direction of the exit because you have no sense of direction, then going to the deepest part of the lair has a pretty good chance of running into prisoners. The Bag of Holding that only holds chocolates was a funny example of Krai's relic obsession, so I found him using it to provide the party with some emergency high calories, high energy food amusing instead of annoying. And having Liz Smart show up to save his hide was totally in keeping with what we know about the Grieving Souls and their helicopter nursemaid attitude towards Krai.

I thought the idea that all of the Grieving Souls are blind fighters on par with Daredevil because they were convinced Krai bought them eyeless masks for training purposes was also over the top and also part of the point.

Wonder where they're going to go from here? I mean, in terms of Krai's balancing act between trying to leave and staying in charge (<===I Edited that in), not in relation to the preview <---
