More like trying to abandon the Japanese auditory even higher by putting the costs of financial failures on the markets that not really give as much money, right.

For real - the "external conditions" have barely anything to do with Japan, as the current position of yen as a currency at this point is as same as was in November 2023 when PS5 retail prices were already got hiked up for the general market, as it kick backed in recent months.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a 13,000 yen price increase for PlayStation 5 in Japan, as well as price increases for various PlayStation 5 accessories. All increases will take effect on September 2.

Remember when the Xbox increased its prices in Japan by 5,000 yen? Guess the same applies here. Ya can go ahead and call it anti-consumer with Sony's 3rd price increase and larger increase with only a week's notice. Nintendo Switch is already dominating in Japan - this will only make that domination more

A steep price increase in a region where you're getting slaughtered by competition... Some would say a genius move. Not a good look; what's Sony thinking? RIP

How many called this one? Imagine how much more the PS5 Pro would cost

And what a great timing too! With their newest game Concord fiasco: "Concord Dev Has EPIC Twitter Meltdown After Catastrophic Game Launch FLOP"

Because the yen is tanking. The yen used to be around 100-110 yen = $1, but has been around 150-160 yen = $1

While much of the world, including the US, have been tightening their monetary policies by increasing Fed interest rates to battle inflation, Japan has kept their negative (yes, negative) interest rates as a way to stimulate their economy. That made the yen less valuable than other currencies, tanking against the dollar, and making goods imported into Japan more expensive

[Update] The yen has now slowly been recovering to around 145 yen = $1 due to the Bank of Japan increasing its interest rates from negative to positive (barely) as well as the US Fed's signal of lowering interest rates soon. Still, the effect takes time, and business decisions are made well beforehand

The interesting thing here, is that MS tried and failed in the Japanese market. SIE have gone out of their way to ruin their market share in Japan. When it was SCE, the PlayStation did really well in Japan.

Ah, so it was low prices that were causing low marketshare, not a lack of games caused by a hard pivot to live service and just a few megabudget titles while also closing smaller studios not suited to live service or megabudget titles.

Good on them for figuring that out.

Does that even matter to the target audience of a premium, higher performance version of the console? Consumers concerned about the price will typically go for the cheaper version. I'll throw $1k at the pro if it costs that much which is less than I spent on a GPU.

This price hike feels off though because you could probably import a US PS5 for less than this MSRP as a new Slim with a disc drive on Amazon right now is $500 which is like 72.5k yen when I checked after hearing about the price increase.

Something about the article and the way it’s written seems…..stupid to say nothing of sensational.

And just to be sure I looked at some other articles and literally one of them complains about “LGBTQs mobs” while another complains about making two traditionally male characters in Mortal Kombat female.

Yeah maybe let’s not link to that site again even if Concord’s steam numbers are legitimately cratering.

Was that all it was?’

Not potentially those studios also like Concord producing games in a genre so ubiquitous no one wants them or just simply being not that good?

Yeah, aside from the price, the amount of games that are always-online live services even if you're only interested in playing in single-player, especially for racing games like Gran Turismo 7, is a huge reason why I still haven't upgraded from Playstation 4 (which I know also has Gran Turismo 7 but I haven't bought it on PS4 either because I refuse to buy games that won't let you play the core part of the game offline).

Fortunately for me, I finally have a PC powerful enough to play modern games (albeit at lower resolutions and medium graphical settings) so my desire to get either a PS5 or an XBox Series X is greatly diminishing compared to a year ago. Maybe I'll feel the urge to buy a current-gen console again when Grand Theft Auto VI is released a year from now but, for now, I'm fine with 8th gen (and earlier) consoles plus PC.

Well, external conditions, also mean the cost of parts and resources etc. that are all needed to build a PS5 are also increasing. Sony's CEO recently said that they are having major trouble bringing the cost of manufacturing down. They want to avoid the PS3 situation and not have to take major losses on hardware anymore. Part of that means, raising the price in areas where the currency is weak. That the exchange rate, according to you, has not changed much compared to 2023, only indicates that Sony has held out as long as they could, and new inventory is coming at higher markups because the costs to manufacture are higher than they were in 2023. So when old inventory moves, the new ones are coming in at additional costs, despite being the same models.

I can guarantee you that the last thing Sony wants is to increase the price of the PS5. The business model relies on getting that hardware into as many people's hands as possible, because the real money is made from % cuts of the sales of 3rd party games. As Nintendo's old heads pointed out, "The console is just a box that people need to play Mario." Without the games the box is pointless. It's a vehicle for delivery and needs to be at a price that the mass market is willing to pay for it, another strong Nintendo pillar. Nintendo is better poised to be a mass market machine with a lower price point specifically because it has opted for older cheaper technology. Sony and Microsoft are finding out the hard way that the power race has risks. But they've always known this, it's the enthusiast gamers that are now learning about the economics of their hobby, and that times aren't always going to be so rosy.

It is true that the pushes to neglect the old model of what worked for live-services, GAAS, and subscriptions have also bitten them in the ass, alongside messaging and content in games that are off-putting to general audiences. But that's little to do with the cost of the box itself being at a mass market price. Whether people like it or not, the global economy is not well, for many reasons, and the fact that manufacturing is offshored to other locales means that there will be higher volatility in pricing and sourcing of parts and goods with every conflict, tension and government and banking fiasco. This is more likely to get worse than better as the usual way of addressing problems is to delay the inevitable for some future generation to contend with.

Sony will undoubtedly lose market share in Japan with this move, especially if Nintendo plays their cards right, but at the same time, Nintendo's reliance on the Japanese market will also not last due to conditions of an aging population and lack of children, who have always been the primary base for their wares. This is also why Japanese 3rd parties have also been making moves to make themselves more appealing to Western Audiences for years, or at least doing what certain consultation groups tell them Western Audiences want, rightly or wrongly.

While Japan's population decline is a huge problem for the country, it doesn't seem to have affected Nintendo at the extent people think, there's a graphic floating around on the Internet that showcases that the Switch's major userbase mainly consists of adults, ranging from 18 to 40 years old.

I would be more surprised if that wasn't the case. I would expect younger consumers to trend towards mobile.

Apparently enough to have the game taken out of circulation and refunds issued. Despite unlike the last gen versions of Cyberpunk being a technically sound game.
