Once you've started something, gotta see it through to the end right? Providing a valuable service though The Scream Man.

Yeah, it's not clear what Saki's motivation for turning down the pool invite was. Confident Yuta wouldn't go and increasingly nervous about leaving him alone with Shiori? Just wanting to spend more time in an environment where he dotes on her? Jealous of Maaya's apparent fascination with him? Or nervous of going to the pool with a boy she's trying not to have a crush on? A bit of all of the above?

I quite like the retro film reel aesthetic of the diary sections, though you could accuse them of being a bit overwrought.

The presentation and especially the way music is used impresses me every week. It really is a nice show to relax to. I also really like the diary sections due to showing how Saki really thinks and feels since she is not an open book. The show keeps things realistic with Saki figuring out what her feelings are without needing any help, no over the top denseness which I welcome.

And yeah, they can both stand to have a little bit more fun.

Fun is going to be had, even if this week's episode was one long struggle to get there. Saki really needs to rethink her way of living, it is not healthy or sustainable long term.

Do you mean the pool party or when Shiori and Saki finally start getting to whatever interaction they're working up to?

This last episode was a whole lot of clogged up non-communication finally opening up a bit after Yuuta kept poking around using that pool party as a stick. Slow going, but a bit more real to life-like than most anime will venture.

No dates shown (Except the flashback at the end) so I won't update the timeline. We can assume this happens in the days after the last entry.

Good episode though. WHile the show is calm almost to the point of being dull, I remain enthralled each and every episode! Smile

Both, though mostly the pool party, it really is one heck of a challenge to get Saki to relax for a bit.

There was one I caught, so I checked back. Tuesday, August 25th, the morning Yuta makes Saki ham and toast, and sends her back to bed. Presumably immediately follows section prior where he tries to talk her in to going to the pool and she claims study has to take priority which puts that at the 24th. Visually, it looks like that is also the night she listens to the tapes we get at the end (though it might not be, but it would maybe explain her lack of sleep), which I take to be of Yuta and his dad. (And were retrieved from the back of a wardrobe the day she moved in). Listening to lil' Yuta being excited to go to the pool might have fed in to her change of heart the following morning. Or it might have been the ham I guess?

Ah, good to know! Updated!

JUNE
7th - Saki and Akiko move in, and presumably Akiko and Taichi get, or are, married.
8th - First day of school where they are related. At the end Saki asks Yuta to help her get a job, and agrees to make dinners in exchange.
9th - Yuta starts looking for a job for Saki, Saki starts making meals.
10th - Yuta saves Saki from getting hit by a truck. Neither finds this particularly noteworthy I guess. Maaya finds out about Yuta and Sakis new relationship as siblings while visiting the apartment.
11th (I think, its not dated) - Saki asks if Yuta is a cross dresser or gay, which he isn't. Yuta and Saki have a conversation about the fact they they may have impulses and urges, but that doesn't mean they need to act on them.
12th - Saki comes into Yutas room and offers to sleep with him, which he rebuffs.
13th - Nothing really happens except that Saki is showing more interest in Yuta, much to her annoyance.

JULY
16th - Saki asks Yuta to tutor her. Saki rights in her diary that she doesn't understand literature, and is glad Yuta can explain it clearly. She seems very emotionally detached
17th - Saki keeps studying, Maaya starts teasing Yuta about maybe crushing on Saki. Yuta makes Saki a study playlist. Saki, in her diary again comments on the music Yuta suggested, but admits to dwelling on the fact he got it from Shiori. She doesn't know why it bothers her, but understands that it does.
18th - Yuta works all day, then he and Shiori go see a movie. Shiori is clearly crushing on him. She also tells him she has 6 months to live, though whether or not this is true is debatable. Yuta checks on Saki when he gets home, finds her asleep, and puts a blanket over her. Agarin writing in her diary, Saki is annoyed at herself for being upset that Yuta is at the movies. She decides she is mostly anxious with herself for having these feelings. We also get a rare glimpse of the parents actually being together in the same space.
19th - Saki asks about the movie, and eventually goes to the book store and meets Shiori. Saki asks for book recommendations, and Shiori starts to pick up the tension. Saki overhears Yuta telling Shiori that Saki is just his sister, nothing more. Diary: Saki realizes Shiori is beautiful, mature and confident in herself, and is annoyed that she would be perfect for Yuta. She decides to get the bookstore job, even though it isn't high paying, changing her mindset about getting out early.
20th - Maaya comes over again to help Saki study. She films Saki and Yuta walking home, not creepily at all. She helps Saki study, then helps Yuta to cook. Diary: Not much new in Sakis diary other than being grateful to her friends
21st - Saki is vaguely annoyed at Yuta, Yuta goes to help her in the rain, they have a LONG chat in an unmoving elevator. Yuta is clearly crushing now too. Diary: Saki passed her test. She was approached by (The manager?) at the bookstore who asked if she was interested in the advertised job. She had a preliminary interview which is why she was late and met Yuta in the elevator. She wonders why she lied about where she was, but knows its because how she is starting to feel about Yuta, which freaks her out a little. We get some hints that her fear of dependency started as a child
22nd - All is well since the elevator chat, School's out for summer, Saki starts at the bookstore.

AUGUST
22nd - Saki and Yuta have been working at the sore for a month. Their parents push them to go and have some fun. Saki says her and Maaya aren't very close, and Yuta also admits to having few friends. It's fall now, which Saki notices because of the fashion changes. Yuta has no interest in fashion, and didn't notice. I am like Yuta.
23rd
The families Air-con is busted. Akiko tells Yuta about Saki being more emotional as a kid, but that she started to become more like she is now around middle school. Yuta and Saki are invited to go to the public pool by Maaya, but Saki doesn't tell Yuta, he finds out from his friend. Both say they don't want to go. Saki admits to herself she is jealous of the way others want to spend time with Yuta (I think? Or she is just jealous of Shiori, though when its brought up in the episode makes that seem like odd placement.
24th
Yuta asks Saki to go to the Pool with him, she says no. This is also probably where she listens to the tapes of Yuta and his dad when Yuta is a kid, which is absolutely not an invasion of privacy.
25th
During a conversation over breakfast, Yuta convinces Saki to get some rest and not push herself to hard.
?? but PROBABLY the next day or so.
Saki and Yuta go to the pool together.

25th
During a conversation over breakfast, Yuta convinces Saki to get some rest and not push herself to hard. Somewhere around here Saki starts to figure out she was at the beach with Yuta as a kid? I think?
Confirmed as the 27th
Saki and Yuta go to the pool together. Saki starts to open up and compliment Yuta a bit more at the pool, mentioning how she notices things he does. Yuta is also starting to watch her more and more, and realizes he likes her too. He almost confesses but stops himself, and Saki calls him her brother to keep the wall up.
28th
Akiko and Taichi take the day off and stay home together with the kids. Saki cuts her hair shorter. Yuta nearly swallows his tongue when he see's her. Saki vows to keep her feelings to herself, and also not write anything down anymore. She throws away the key (to her diary?)

I wasn't clear on this bit.. was it a real flashback/memory, or was it imagined? Did they not go to the beach (she initially refused to protect her mother) but she realises if they had she'd maybe have met Yuta there? And things would have maybe turned out differently without the whole step-siblings complication...

I assume Saki cuts here hair because she's decided he likes long hair? It's an attempt to create distance from him and from the Saki of the day before. But judging by his reaction it's maybe made things worse...

That... or they did meet at the beach all those years ago, and the photo on Akiko's phone and the new hair have reminded him of that?

We're presumably heading in to the false separation arc now, as they both try to rebuild the walls and maintain a "proper" sibling relationship.

I THINK they did meet, but Im honestly not sure. It would be just like a Romance anime trope for them to have done so though, so I wouldn't be shocked.

I *think* the beach scene with Saki and Yuta is another one of the mental projections? Saki and Yuta might not remember it, but I'm pretty sure the parents would have remembered meeting each other and talking and laughing while their kids played for hours..

I mean, maybe a beach encounter provided an icebreaker years later when they met each other at the bar where Saki's mom was working at, but surely they would have mentioned that Saki and Yuta had met before when the families merged..

BTW - if I had an Edjwald Seasonal Awards Ceremony, this anime would get best musical backgrounds for summer 24.

We now have a confirmed case of Yuta getting sister zoned. How long that farce will last is a fun question as is who will make the eventual first move. They both seem like characters to keep things as they are and simply ignore the problem/situation.

I know a lot of people have complained about this anime being too slow moving and laid back, but this was the first episode where I felt a little drowsy watching it. Not that it was an unpleasant experience or anything, and I did watch it after a long day at work, but I kept feeling like if I sank any further into my couch I might drift off to sleep. Maybe it's because the dynamic between Yuta and Saki was in a holding pattern while the anime built up to presented potential...is rivals even the right word? Since both Yuta and Saki are trying to repress their growing feelings for each other, maybe describing the new characters as further complications would be more accurate?

This episode was undoubtedly slow. Everyone just stews in their emotions for a bit and nothing much happens. I think that sense of stasis was the point though. To reinforce their frustration and the dead end nature of their self denial. They both have to resolve their feelings one way or another. Simply hiding achieves nothing. How effective that actually is dragged out over 20-odd minutes is probably a matter of personal taste.

How much of a rival Yuta's senpai actually is remains a bit unclear. The boy in Saki's class is a different matter, though she shows less than no interest in him so I don't fancy his chances unless she decides he might provide an effective distraction.

Quite a lot of long shots through doorways where they only have to animate part of the screen too, saving some budget...
