Is the article writer non-native English speaker? I don't mean to demean them in any way, but the flow of the text felt like what you would get if one first wrote in Japanese, put it through google translate, and edited the output, especially the last paragraph?

As a background otaku the fact that people care so little about backgrounds they can't even be assed to draw them anymore saddens me. As if CGI wasn't bad enough...
Backgrounds should be works of art in their own right.

Imagine all the artists that have done backgrounds and really given them some thought: "What does the art direction tell me to do? How does this color feel if I use it? Should I reference some other types of clouds?". Then you have AI just creating a similar thing based on artists that have put this work in already, just to squeeze more production out of an industry full of issues instead of actually analyzing and trying to fix those issues.

CGI isn't necessarily bad, just depends on how you do it. Apothecary Diaries has CGI backgrounds but it's done well.

This seems like a sensible way to integrate AI into anime/manga production. AI currently lags far behind humans in creative ability, but it can handle routine or formulaic work. I can see human creators relying on AI to speed up tedious tasks, but I don't expect AI to replace humans in key roles anytime soon.

Hopefully AI doesn't deny newer animators the chances they traditionally have to develop their skills.

The very first Image is literally Ai generated, and so are all 4 Images from the Original Post on Twitter. Wtf
This all looks so utterly terrible, holy shit. Anime Quality is already declining with them adding weird CGI/3D Backgrounds; but Ai stuff is literally worse.
Just stop doing Anime if the Studios have no Money to do the basics.

For backgrounds, I'm not a fan of replacing human art with AI, and even as a tool like this where the base is human-drawn, it still feels like too much of a lean on AI. I'm not sure if I would notice it in a show and I understand the need to speed up commercial production, but at some point, I think we need to focus on other ways of making profit that don't involve cutting out the art and replacing it with intention-less generated images. That said, I do think AI has a place in production. This just feels a tad too far since it involves the entirety of the screen.
Also, while I do like the approach to training data on in-house commercial manga, and only with said mangaka's permission (that's what this says, yes?), I feel like at some point, that will still be too little data. I've seen how much info is needed to produce something tangible. If companies like Google are struggling with this, I'm even less confident about this approach. Especially considering the manga and comics I've seen be AI generated looks awful and aimless. Assistants are such an important aspect to training new authors, so it does not sound right to outright replace them. And whole manga with AI is just... not how I want my media landscape to end up saturated...

As a translator who spent a good chunk of my childhood in Japan, I do see what you mean (starting sentences often with "So, ..." and "However, ..." the way Japanese uses それで、 orしかし、is a big hint of Japanese language brain mode). I don't personally have a problem with it because it's still very readable. Are you just making an observation or offering a constructive critique? If the latter, it might help to provide examples of anything that might have broken your reading flow.

That last paragraph does feel off. Most of the article reads like a news piece, but the last paragraph feels like it was copy-pasted from an opinion piece without attribution.

I wonder how long will it take for them too drop the practice because I have yet to seen any use of AI that sticks in the long run. The "first" AI manga? I don't even know what it was about- I never once seen someone talk about it or use it's title, I don't think they made another one. The Dog And The Boy stuff? The studio no longer accepts AI on the portfolios of the people applying. The WordMaker stuff? Nothing came out of it. One issue Black Jack continuation with generated character designs? I can't even find people talking about it to learn if it was any good. I am still waiting the hear back from the AI anime movie thing. The other one. The first one looked like cheap rotoscope and no one talks about that one- Not even sure whether it is out or not.
I have yet to see usage of AI stick in a serious production.

If AI can help anime production then it seems like a perfect use for it.

This seems like a pretty sensible use to me -- similar to other successful applications (like AI denoising): small in scope, and supervised and readily modified before-or-after by a human, rather than trying to automate an entire artistic pipeline. Closer to applying a PS/GIMP filter than creating a 20-minute 3D video with a compelling narrative.

Not sure exactly what, but I do read a few novels on syosetu with google translate and sometimes use google translate to read articles, and especially that last paragraph felt very similar when I do.

Background colouring is literally the worst possible ai application. I don't want every anime to have hideous ai colour palettes.
I no longer look forward to new anime... I think I really am finally quitting new anime thanks to ai.
