Yeah, I've heard about this yesterday via social media, and from local (& national) news on Youtube. I was wondering if ANN would report on that, and I kind of expected that. If you want to see the video from Youtube, here they are:
CBS 8 San Diego report ABC 10 report NBC News report Overall, according to the report, it looks like the sting was a success. Also this year's Comic Con seem to be a success too. Speaking of San Diego Comic Con, there has been questions about the future of it (via this report from CBS 8 and KPBS). Will Comic-Con remain in San Diego or is it going to move to another populous part of California like Los Angeles or Anaheim? |

Well, three takes from this: - The police did a great job; - Hope the women and girl are OK now; - Hope the media coverage over this incident is sensible, rather than a sensationalist attempt at connecting everything geek/otaku with trafficking. |

You’re not kidding. Some people were even blaming it on like Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom in the comments like as if they had a part of as to why this occurred in the first place but they don’t. |

California's Department of Justice could use some more transparent language. "Human trafficking" at a convention evokes imagery of kidnapping attendees, but to be clear, this refers to prostitution. I point that out because any event this large would attract that kind of activity. I mean, think about it. You've got tens of thousands of people in hotel rooms during an event with a party atmosphere. I guarantee this happens at political or sporting events, concerts, etc. It's as surprising as if they had busted a bunch of drug dealers.
That questionable language reflects how they described the offenders, too. Calling them "human traffickers" would make you assume they're the pimps. Yet the press release later admits they were "sex buyers." Be my guest if you want to arrest those people (especially if they knew one of them was underage), but there has to be better terminology than that. |

Straight up kidnapping someone in a populated area is probably very difficult to do without being noticed. The police wouldn't need a sting operation if it was that obvious. Human traffickers lure their victims into a trap. Free cruise? Nope you are on pirate ship. It happens way more often than you think. |
