The second book the mysterious bookshop proprietor can be seen reading in episode 8 is titled Ophiotaurus, which is a pretty deep cut mythologically (although apparently the Othiotaurus appears in one of the Percy Jackson books so perhaps it is better-known than I assume).

The weird dancing cat at the end of episode 9 is probably tied into the cat imagery used in the ED — and, of course, the flying ghost cat who visited Nodoka in the hospital, For manga readers (I am not yet one), perhaps it’s an introduction to another major character.
Otherwise, as Rebecca says, it seems a weird interjection. |

What a frustrating watch. Even if the manga wasn't pulpy, putting all its worst aspects on display and doing only so much to emphasize what it does do fine enough... ah well.

This was anime-original ending, and I'm not fully sold on it, but I guess if some people liked it maybe it's not that bad? While they tried to clumsily leave door open for season two with "maybe Oto will come to read your book", I guess we'll never get any anime continuation, especially since it seems it wasn't that popular, and ending looked definitive enough that continuing to season 2 would be hard.
I really liked the manga, urban legends make for a great theme, just like in "Otherside Picnic", another favorite of mine, and I didn't mind fanservice that much, maybe due to mix of horror and comedy that makes ecchi more fitting as well. I especially liked the design of Sumireko, she's great, hot, but not in traditional anime way, bit tomboyish, makes great faces, and book and legend nerd at that. I also liked the teacher, and that she's been later shown to keep being helpful to several people as well, and I teared up atthe tragic story of two "they were just roommates" friends with that "you opened your door to me, so I'll do the same" ending which was fantastic. I regret that anime didn't catch on, though at least reviewer enjoyed, and so did I despite few reservations. Why aren't those fantasy/horror stories more popular, until they include shonen exorcists like JJK? I think Otherside Picnic and Dark Gathering weren't too popular either. They feel more interesting to me than some isekai or other LitRPG fantasy, they're more like Bakemonogatari which was great, horny (even too horny at times), and made you think and feel stuff. This definitely felt like an anime original ending, so after a quick scan of the manga, that appears to be the case (along with the confirmation above).
I thought it was a fine ending for the series though. I wouldn't mind another season, though since it was mentioned above, I'd rather have more Dark Gathering as I thought that was a great horror show. I don't mind fan service (quite the opposite in fact), but I don't really think that it fit here. It also seems to have been toned down from the manga, which may be why it didn't work for me. It felt unnecessary for the show as presented, though perhaps if they had gone "all in" then maybe it wouldn't have felt so shoe-horned in... |

I wouldn't mind another season of Dark Gathering at all. Otherside Picnic as well. Yeah, fanservice was toned down, in manga there were nipples, mostly Sumireko's inverted ones, which was at least nice change from typical ecchi anime, where all women have breasts that looks same way. I didn't mind toning down, but if it made some people pass on the adaptation, while there was enough of it to still creep some other viewers out, then it was worst kind of compromise. |

I liked it. I won't say it'd change my life, but it was interesting that twist on urban legends, mythology and folklore, instead of "evil demons being evil". Many of the cases were born out of desperation or with good reasons going wrong.
The last episode, probably was re-done in the last week, after watching the lack of track for the anime. Had they planned for a 2nd season, they'd left Adashino return as a hint. But they were not given the green light, so they wrap they all down as best as they could. Interesting take on Grave of fireflies and postWW2 Japan. I have not read the manga (not really interested in adding another series more), so, for me, its good enough. |
