The first Apothecary Diaries volume was printed in 2011, whereas the first volume of this released in 2014. So highly doubtful on author's part, at least not because of the recent uptick of popularity. Might have played a part on the decision to make an anime though...

Apothecary Diaries began on Narou that year. 2014 was the year the first volume came out. Quite the coincidence that both these series started publication in the same year.

A story about a female lead in the medical industry who solves crimes? I'm down!
The design is giving me strong Rie Takahashi vibes.

If you mean "Read or Die", there were talks about new anime a couple of years ago, but nothing since.

While I'm not an anime industry insider, my understanding is traditional publishing in the west uses something called "comp titles" which means your supposed to say while pitching "my book is like Harry Potter and Sandman" or something to that effect, essentially, its sort of a way to say my project is viable, my project has an audience, my project has a demographic, this makes it more enticing to get picked up. So yeah. It's no surprise stuff like this happens. It's not people trying to ride a trend.... neccessarily... It's just that systematically the concept of comp titles creates trends because if you can't compare your work to something else then you don't get picked up, so the trends form "emergently", rather than someone just sticking there hands into a trend...

Quote: | Haruhi's Noizi Ito illustrates novels of doctor solving murders, medical mysteries |
just to clarify, she's only doing character designs and cover art. The artist for the actual novels for everything else is Hiroki Ohara

I think I’m more impressed that a practicing doctor managed to find time to write mystery novels.
