I know for a fact that there were Index fans under Yen Press' Twitter, begging for them to license the NT novels. And now it happens. Congrats to them.

As someone who has been reading through the novels just a few years ago, I really hope they re-release physical copies. It's so hard to buy some of the volumes with their prices today. Digital is decent, but not preferred.

hype, will need to buy another bookshelf and dedicate it just to Touma and Accelerator I mean, Index novels.

Reading the blurb, doesn't sound like the main Index characters are even in this one. Is this a spin-off of the main Index series?

It is a sequel and all the usual suspects appear from time to time.

Finally. And usually when Yen Press licenses something like this it means an anime announcement will be coming in the year or so...

It's a direct sequel and you can consider it Part 2.

"from time to time"

which makes it seem like they are not the main characters anymore.

Kamijou Touma is still the main protagonist and this conflict still heavily involves Aleister & Laura. Accelerator, Hamazura, Misaka, etc and related still have regular appearances, it's just not limited to a Vol 15/19 sub arc scenario. That's about as much as can be said.

Next question about the NT novels: If you're caught up on all franchise anime, can you plow straight into NT, or is there anything that's strongly recommended reading first?

(For the record, I have only read the first of the Index source novels.)

Like almost all other LNs, the anime for index cuts out a MASSIVE amount of detail(especially season 3, which straight up cuts out entire scenes and fights). Heavily reccomend restarting.

I would say knock SS2 out since they outright skipped it and it has some essential worldbuilding and character. Other than that... you can also just keep up with the manga concurrently that's adapting (albeit god knows when since it's in the middle of V18/22) Season 3's content that was rushed or skipped if you're interested but find the LN daunting, but it'll be a while.

But otherwise, you can jump right in.

I would HIGHLY suggest reading the LNs first. The anime has been cutting stuff since season 1 and they really started going insane with the cuts in season 3.

Beginning with NT, Touma, Accelerator, and Hamazura basically traded off the role of "main character", with Accelerator and Hamazura getting more focus in order to bring their ever-expanding casts of girls a bit more in line with the harem established for Touma in Part 1.

Also, if I remember correctly, the blurb used in this article is pretty similar to the one originally used for the first volume of NT, which began with the readers being unsure of whether or not Touma was even coming back spoiler[(he spent the majority of the first volume still missing, only to mysteriously re-appear in Academy City in the final chapter)].
