Well that's a massive relief! I get contracts can be iron-clad and take time to rework, but I'm sure it was frustrating for everyone working on the dub to have new episodes (post-digitial purchase release) drop on a "meant to be dead by now" service that cannot really promote themselves. Especially since they've been working like crazy getting closer and closer to catching up.

And not a single episode of the dub will have closed captions on Crunchyroll, despite every episode on Funimation having captions.

I'm wondering if this can also mean that Crunchyroll will have a great chance of adding the remaining One Piece films, TV specials, OVAs, etc. to their library.

It completely blows my mind how hard Funiroll has pushed to catch up over the past few years. They're now within 100 episodes of the Japanese broadcast premieres. If they wanted, they could probably make the series a simuldub within the next year or so, which is an insane thought.

They would have been ahead of time sooner. Look at other anime with huge amounts of episodes. The real reason is Toei purposely stops them from working. FUNI once said years ago that they would have been caught up if Toei didn't stop them. Look at Fairy Tail for example. |

That being said, Yamato’s protrayal has not been consistent at all. Do we consider them a boy or a girl? Oda keeps switching them up.
It’s why I say just call Yamato what you want, because even Oda isn’t consistent with it. |

And I can almost guarantee you that the reason they have caught up in recent years is because Toei more or less has the reigns completely now so there’s no longer any hang ups like when FUNi was licensing it in season batches and having years of downtime. Toei decides how it is released and where it streams and broadcasts. Starting with Punk Hazard, Toei has kept the dub going basically nonstop. The question is how close are they going to get the dub to the Japanese broadcast? They’re 65ish episodes behind or less depending how far past 1,000 they actually already dubbed. Realistically they could be as few as 50 episodes behind. With such a huge cast it would probably be very hard to be within 10 episodes or less but with the rate the dub has been churning out it’s not impossible. If they let the dub close the gap to a month or two behind the simulcast it will be a startling contrast to the Toei who didn’t even simulcast Dragon Ball Super till it was 46 episodes into the Japanese broadcast and didn’t start the dub until it was closer to 70 to say nothing for how long they took to dub the Digimon reboot TV series, World Trigger season 2 and Dragon Quest Dai. Side note, the Yamato casting is chef’s kiss. |

Production-wise, they were around 1046 a little over two weeks ago. But I think given the size of the cast, recording could be more within a certain range of episodes vs everyone working on one fully and then the next. And according to multiple people working on the show, it has a bit of a stricter review and approval process than most due to Toei's involvement, hence the gap. Ideally if they were going to go for simuldub status, it would probably be a lot easier on everyone involved (scriptwriters, directors who need to cast the show and schedule in recording hours for everyone, local or remote, etc...) if they maintained a bit more distance that your typical 2-week behind seasonal. |

A friend of mine asked awhile ago if One Piece was dubbed on CR, I've got good news for him now. I'm surprised how close they are to the current current episode, didn't Funimations dub start 8 years or so after the first episode was broadcasted?
