Hopefully, Macross will go back to its roots of telling a good story. I haven't watched the last series of Macross anime, because they seem interesting to me. And turning Macross into an idol anime? Really?

I mean it's always been music based? Did you not watch 7 where you had Basara the whole series scream at people, animals, space monsters and even mountains to listen to his song? The only 2 that had the weakest use of song were Plus and Zero and I'm stretching for you. Guess like those early on in 7 you didn't listen.

Macross has always has an idol aspect to it though, with every series having a singer or idol be an important part of the story. From Lynn Minmei being based off the idols of the 80's, to Sharon Applie, to Ransha Mei, Fire Bomber, Sheryl Nome, etc..

It’s too bad the Macross franchise has degenerated into being entirely cutesy bullshit. Not that the franchise has ever been consistently good to begin with. The original, Plus, and maybe Frontier being the only highlights. I’m hoping for something more like Plus and less like Delta.

Hallelujah! Very happy with this news and delighted with Sunrise being brought on board. Macross needs an injection of new thinking. Kawamori and Satelight haven’t done anything decent since… Frontier?

Still haven't announced release dates for the old Macross stuff. Anyway, maybe they're trying to break into the American market, given that Gundam is more successful and accessable nowadays here than Macross. I wonder if this means a Gundam crossover.

Well, that's a lie.

Frontier was the first Macross series I watched, despite having been watching anime for almost a decade by then. I procced to watch some of the older series and then came back to Delta, which honestly sucked.

7 was the best don't deny it. Glam rock, pushing back against near eldritch levels of space monsters via music which is what Macross was all about. It was always about the music being just accompanying the action.

I was really into Macross, Minmay, and Mari Iijima's music around late 2000s - actually watched first Macross series in 2009, which is the same year when story is happening.
Watched pretty much everything up to the Frontier, although not sure whether I watched the first Frontier movie or not.
...
Anyway, I just checked on MAL, and realized how niche Macross really is for a franchise that is decades old.
1 Macross Frontier - 143381 members (which really isn't that much nowadays)
2 Macross (first series) - 104716 members
3 Macross Delta - 74851 members
4 Macross Plus - 46093 members
5 - Macross: Do You Remember Love? - 45764 members
Now, MAL isn't perfect, but it still can tell you how popular something really is outside Japan.
Pokemon series may be an exception because most people who watch aren't active on MAL, IMO.
On Reddit, r/macross has around 9300 members, which is sad, while, for instance, r/Gundam has 177000 members, and even that is kinda not that impressive.
I love Macross for what it is, and it makes me wonder what would it take for it to matter more.

To think Sunrise and not Satelight animating the new Macross is shocking. Maybe there will a female lead Valkyrie pilot as well? I wonder what kind of pop music they'll do.

I wonder what the next musical trend will be? We already had lone singers, rockbands, single idols and idol teams.

I hope not. I have nothing against female leads, but by Macross standards that would probably mean a love triangle with two boring guys, and that SUCKED in M7.

Finnaly, i took my time to watch everything from Macross recently, this will be interesting.
Sunrise hummm it will be better in animation, but they already have Gundam, now Macross too? That's cheating

That kind of stuff sells. I've seen people express this sentiment elsewhere and it's just how the series is, plus it's always had some aspect of pop idol stuff in it (Zero might be an exception).

7 was mind-numbingly repetitive, went absolutely nowhere and had a cast full of complete morons.

Can we get it here this time? There should be no legal obstacles preventing such.
