Thanks for this! It gave more context to Suzume that I think most non-Japanese wouldn’t pick up on or realize (including me.) Or, at least, people who never experienced natural disasters like this.

So much of the film revolves around the impact of natural disasters, survivors, and connecting with the past. And it’s a past you can’t even reminisce by visiting the setting. The significant locations in Suzume can only rot and decay. That gets to me.

But it has to be more impactful for people who knows exactly what that’s like. That quote about how there were people who needed to hear what was said in Suzume is really sweet

That was a lovely interview, as someone who has been watching Shinkai's works since the indie days, I feel like growing up together with his view and the last line is just chef's kiss.

Great interview. Not too interested in the idea of pursuing more adult relationships or depicting things closer to that. I can perfectly relate to the lives, situations, etc because they did happen, and the youthful side of the characters and their relations is what makes it special and fun for me.

That final response and how Tohoku residents reacted and how some may not alway like it but it doesn't mean he shouldn't make the film was great. Really liked the message and themes of this movie.

I'm glad the questions asked were thoughtful and detailed rather than run-of-the-mill and short ones. Shinkai seems to be someone who will give you in-depth answers if the questions warrant them and its apparent from this interview.

The friend I went to see the film with yesterday came out of it fairly impressed with not only its animation but the themes that were covered. He hadn't seen a film directed by Shinkai before and it's now curious about watching the previous ones when he has an opportunity to do so. He mentioned that he hadn't seen such a refreshing film at the cinema for some time which is a great compliment for the impression that Suzume left on him).
