The review seems in line from what I've seen from the trailer. I have an additional question: does the game hold any appeal to people who have not watched One Piece before? I have no preconceived feelings about One Piece but simply have not watched it because it is too big of a time commitment. And I currently have not plans to start watching it too. But I like RPGs. Would you recommend the game to people like me? Does it hold up as a standalone product?

Unfortunately for you the game was made for the fans first and foremost. The game expects that you're already familiar with the world, characters and plot to a certain point.

Yeah, the game isn’t openly hostile to newcomers but it’s also hard to say whether the events would really have much impact without prior knowledge. And since it’s a pretty traditional rpg, it’s a long experience to boot.

It's certainly an easy game, but then I'm not sure if folks come to JRPGs for the challenge aspect in the first place. I certainly wish the game was a bit more challenging, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.

Didn't they add a hard mode? Unless it's not much of a challenge either.
