The last several Naruto chapters have been the highly anticipated spoiler[Sasuke vs. Itachi. Kishimoto said for 2008, he's focusing on Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi. WTH? Naruto has taken a real backseat in Shippuden and Part 2 of the manga. I think it's disrespectful to the aspect of a main character when there are entire chapters that a main character isn't in (even more if they aren't in an entire tankoubon save for the chapter title pages and the book covers). It's supposed Naruto. Lately. it's more like Sasuke and Friends. What's your take on this: focusing less on the most important (and powerful) character in the series.]

I'm not a follower of Naruto, but how many mangas/shows are there now? Maybe they ought to do that in order to keep fresh? I wouldn't like it in a six part series, but for a longer series, I wouldn't mind, personally.

I've seen stuff where there's a focus taken off the main character for a period of time. One Piece does this a lot. It doesn't just focus on Luffy all the time. It focuses on also his crew and anybody else involved with their adventures.

I think the other characters are equally important. It'd be a major waste not to develop the rest of the cast. I don't need to see Naruto in every chapter. In fact, this is a problem I have with the anime version. They tend to stick Naruto in scenes where he originally wasn't in.

And shouldn't this be in the manga forum?

I think he's referring to Shippuden.

Oh. Well he used the words 'tankobon' and 'pages' and 'chapters'.

I guess it could go either way then. If he's using more manga terms then maybe this thread should be moved to the manga section.

I fail to see how this is a bad thing.

Funny thing is, we already discussed something like this in the manga forum.

...huh? My biggest complaint about anime/manga is that the main character usually gets almost all of the focus and the side characters that I tend to really like get cast away in favor of the lead. I personally don't like the idea of having one main character. Give other characters time to shine!

My biggest complaint with my favorite series is that the characters I tend to like never get to do much of anything because it's all about the main character. That's what is boring. Other characters exist for more than the task of being props for the main character; they all have a story to tell, too. If the writer had made them the lead instead, then the current lead would be just as "unimportant" as that current side character. The only real reason a lead is a lead is because the writer chooses them to be it.

There isn't any reason why Naruto is more deserving of screentime than Sasuke, nor is there a reason why Yuuri deserves more screentime than Gunter in Kyo Kara Maoh, or Allen and Kanda in D. Grayman. Main character doesn't automatically mean more important. Though a main character is important, what really makes a story good are the characters surrounding the main character. They deserve recognition.

That is why I enjoy Naruto so much. It's not about one character (specifically Naruto in which the Manga and Anime is named after) but all the characters in that set universe.

I understand,my favorite characters are Rock lee and Gai Sensei.Kishimoto kind of ditched them for now for what we are currently seeing.Same with the Hyuga family.Naruto has been showing up like Goku if you think about it.Goku was hardly around during the middle and end of DBZ,the focus was taken off the supposed main character, many times,in place for others in the group. When all you really want is see is Naruto or Goku,in that case.

The story is kind of a mess right now.spoiler[ He is focusing all of his attention on Sasuke and Itachi fight, which is baddass still.] I want to see Kikashi and Gai kick some ass again.spoiler[ IMO I don't see the U.S. fans loving Naruto as much when Shippuden hits. It's very slow and the time skip only caters to it's Manga and Video game crowd. As well as us bastard's, that download illegally and keep up with the current airing. ]

spoiler[ I believe the current battle,is Kishi making up for that huge gap when Sasuke was with Orochimaru and Naruto was building his Rasengan.A lot of focus was on Naruto,Sasuke was left out of the picture (He is simply the fan favorite).Sasuke is too cliché in my opinion. If anyone has read the Shonen Jump brick mags(the Japanese ones, not the smaller U.S. counterpart) they have popularity polls that would dictate who you would see more of,too.] It's something we in the US or the UK can't vote on.I believe Kishi will get back to Naruto in no time.spoiler[Itachi just whipped out the "Susanou".Maybe Naruto will come into play now.]

Actually, that's the way I've been kind of seeing it. I think Kishi is going for what Akira Toriyama was trying to do at this point by keeping the main character busy with other things while the others get the main focus of the most important events in the story. Like for example, in DBZ we had everyone else fighting the Saiyans while they had to wait for Goku to come back from Snake Way, everyone else holding their own on Namek and fighting the Ginyuu Force and such while they had to wait for Goku to heal on Earth and for his ship to arrive on Namek, the others trying to hold Freeza off while waiting for Goku to finish healing, the others, ect.

So far in Naruto part 2 it hasn't been quite the same thing outside of spoiler[the others having to hold off Hidan/Kakkuuzu while Naruto completes his Rasengan training, but it's still the basic premise. I mean, Naruto just barely found out about Sasuke's current situation and now he's out trying to catch him. So I'd say it kind of makes sense to keep him busy with stuff like that while attention shifts to more important things happening in the main storyline, which right now is yeah, the climactic and epic Sasuke/Itachi battle. I mean how else do you do it? And it'll probably be the same thing with the Sakura/Kakkashi shift of focus as well, because I personally see Kishi keeping Naruto busy with the upcoming Chuunin exams by then. And even then, who's to say Naruto won't show up in the end of each of these arcs and have a big shining moment like what he did with Hidan/Kakkuzu or like Goku did in MOST of DBZ? ].

The reason a character is a lead is because a series starts with that character. Don't get the wrong impression, supporting characters need their time too. But if things are done in a manner where you can't tell who the main character is then I know something has to be put into question. I know one anime like that that has me questioning who its lead character is.

Who needs to know if one single character is a lead, though? You really don't need one lead; multiple leads are perfectly acceptable. Have you ever read Dracula? If so, who would you call the "lead" in that? Johnathan Harker? Dracula himself? Dr. Von Helsing? Mina Harker? Any of them would be a possible choice, yet Dracula is considered classic literature, even though it does this.

In other words, it's perfectly acceptable to have multiple "leads"; it's just a different--and in my opinion more entertaining--method of storytelling.

I fail to see how that's a bad thing as well. I'm no fan of Naruto, but there's nothing wrong with some character development.
