Nah, it's pretty usual for TGA to include indie game that was blown out this year (Inside, Celeste, Hades, and somehow the winner of the last one - It Takes Two) in The Best Game awards, and Stray totally fits.

It would be neat if it won one of the categories like Best Music.

I can wish, but the probability is very low with the competition is being sandwiched between Elden Ring and GoW: Ragnarok.

Probably helps it was financed by a millionaire who helps with indie games for the fun of it so they likely threw some cash to get it on there. Though that's the the entire game awards in general when the so called 'judges' are 90% of the vote.

It's totally not cash, because it is too much to burn for nearly zero marketing level and you need to please most of the voters just to include the game on the list - and if anything, indie games that "competed" in Best Game Awards previously (Inside, Celeste and Hades) were not backed at all by big names and actually were self-published.
Stray just got there by how it was praised by the community and game journalists (which are basically the judges of TGA), that's all.

They all seem to be action titles and none which particularly interest me. Disappointed but not surprised; I wish more heartwarming titles got their due (though ACNH may have).

This reminds me that people are pointing out that the Best Family Game nominees are comprised of 4 Switch exclusives and LEGO Star Wars. Some are saying that's like the the Best Animated Feature in the Oscars, which always seems to favor Disney, but in this case it's just Nintendo. At least Nintendo has Xenoblade 3 in the Best Game section, and Bayonetta 3, which is a Switch exclusive as well, nominated for Best Action game. I think this just shows that, outside of Nintendo, there's not many big kid-friendly games made these days, I mean there's Sonic Frontiers but I don't think critics think is Game Award material, though Nintendo Switch Sports isn't either according to some people.

I'll be watching only for the next Hideo Kojima game reveal. Maybe also anything new on Silent Hill. Will probably pick up Ragnarok next year.

@WANNFH
Guess you're right that Stray likely didn't pay for it. Hades and Celeste had much better critical reception than Stray. Stray got attention because cute cat game, but the actual gameplay was pretty average. It's probably in the middle to bottom of a whole bunch of the critics nominations they used to build the list and ends up sneaking in just because of that.
It's the indie darling they included to give a thin veneer of legitimacy and distract from the other nominations being paid for advertisements and the whole "Game Awards" being a marketing exercise.
