I've been a long-time fan of anime and, putting it bluntly, Urusei Yatsura has always creeped me out. Lum is a violent crazy-obsessed abusive stalker, the sort of person that gets restraining orders made out against her and Ataru is a greasy sleazeball groper who again should be the subject of a raft of legal filings and a prominent listing on the sexual offender register. It's not the only popular long-running Japanese anime "comedy" like this, see also To Love RU and a few others.
As a fun mental exercise, try reversing the genders of the two main characters and see what you think of their humorous antics then.

Have you watched Bang Dream? I recommend it. |
Yeah! I'm a decent sized fan of bandori. I've seen seasons 2 + 3 as well as the short series, the morfonica special and the 1st live. i used to play the game a bunch as well but haven't in a while

I'll be watching it. It's kind of an unfortunate time for it to come out, since Uzaki-chan is exactly the type of series to get lost in the cracks, but I did enjoy the first season and heard good things about what's to come.

Then Mob Psycho will put us back together...

Well, all I can say about your comment is that it says more about you and your viewing habits than about the anime and characters in question. For example, I‘d bet than you haven‘t watched anything of UY past a couple of episodes from the first season and maybe the first movie before you decided it was stupid and not for you, which is unfortunate because the franchise‘s beginning is the weakest in my opinion. It‘s no secret to long time-fans of anime that both Lum and Ataru underwent some major change in characterization early on in the anime and manga. Lum became softer, less hostile towards Ataru and got more moments where she wasn‘t involved with him at all. Ataru on the other hand increasingly got moments where he showed kindness towards her (and others) and generally started to display great cunningness to achieve the goals he set to himself. Both Ataru‘s and Lum‘s characterization was further developped in order to keep the main premise fresh and interesting.

A lot of great series returning this season. For me Mob Psycho 100 and Golden Kamuy are the ones I'm most looking forward to, but I'll also be watching MHA and SpyxFamily. Of the new series I'll wait for the early reviews to see what seems interesting, but Chainsaw Man feels like a given.

I go by the three-episode rule for most animes although I can and will abandon a series new to me half-way through the first episode on occasion. Original UY did not pass that three-episode rule even in the day when I'd watch any sort of crap simply because it was anime, shown as badly-subbed VHS copies in anime con viewing rooms.
Lum is psychotically obsessed and Ataru is a sleaze. Some folks like watching wife-beater shows and stalker romances (Hollywood is not immune to those plotlines either) but they're not romantic comedies, they're horror bordering on torture porn.

And most likely To Your Eternity S2 and Do It Yourself (which I hope it's going to be a short series). As for Akiba Maid War, I might check that one out if that one ends up interesting and same with the Sword Daddy Isekai and Arknights. But this many series are already sound like a lot, so we'll see: I only finished up with Lycoris Recoil and Shadows House S2 last season, so... |
Since then, I've seen the 1st episode of Sword Daddy and it's not my kind of thing so far, so it's a hard pass. On the other hand, Witch from Mercury's prologue is a banger and I'm interested in how is this going to unfold; I haven't followed any Gundam series since 00, but I'm planning to get back to it at some point, maybe IBO is going to be the next I'll binge.

I mean...is this a necessary mental exercise? We have tons of anime, including popular shonen series like The Seven Deadly Sins, in which women are sexually harassed for comic relief. It's okay to just point at the trope and say "this is bad," instead of trying to turn it into a "people only think it's okay because it's a woman doing it." Because the reality is...they think it's okay because it's normalized in anime.

So this space-guy Lummy comes down to Earth and starts obsessively chasing a random human girl Ataruko around, torturing her repeatedly with near-lethal electric shocks when she refuses his crazed advances or he thinks she is "cheating" on him.
"I'm only doing this because I love you! You're making me do this to you! It's your fault! ZAAAAAP!"
Usually in the real world it ends up with the guy being tracked down by the cops after the girl's body is discovered in a ditch somewhere, or maybe a murder-suicide along with anyone near the girl when he finally snaps. In UY it's a laugh-a-minute stuff because Lum is cute and Ataru deserves to be electrocuted for not falling totally for her cuteness. ZAAAAAP!

Yeah, and?
Like I said, you can criticize it, but acting like the problems are ignored because of the genders is ignorance when we have male heroes who do just as bad - if not worse - to their female protagonists and also aren't complained about.
Also, it's slapstick, dude. People being abusive to each other is a staple of the comedy style.

So I guessed right. You have no idea how the characters change and how good some of the later episodes from Oshii get. I respect that you don't like the series, but judging it by not even three episodes (which you have seen decades ago) is like me saying One Piece is a nonsense cartoon about a bunch of obnoxious pirates and a constant screaming main hero who has rubber arms, or saying YKK is that cartoon with the lesbian robots in the future ;-)

Does Lum stop torturing Ataru by electrocuting him while we are supposed to laugh? Does Ataru stop being a sexual predator and sleazeball for supposedly comic reasons? My guess is no. I may be wrong.
As for One Piece, like Naruto I don't see the attraction of stories of people hitting each other for no apparent reason, especially when there are no consequences (severe injuries, maimings, blindings etc.) and everybody is back to "normal" next episode. Hell even the hats people wear in One Piece seem to survive cataclysmic disasters. I realise this attitude may exclude me from the Cult of Shonen but if so then so be it.
YKK on the other hand I'm a big BIG fan of but "Gun-toting robot lesbian bikers roaming a post-apocalyptic wasteland" is right up my alley plot-wise and no-one gets tortured for laughs in that series. Pity that the Seven Seas English-language release of the manga is a train-wreck, I've been waiting twenty years and more for it.
