I would love to own a Cel, but all the good ones cost a fortune. I also hear the paint can fade if exposed to direct sunlight for too long.

^ It really depends on the series. All the popular series like Sailor Moon, Dragonball, etc. can run you into the hundreds-thousands depending on scene, character, condition, etc. But obscure titles are still pretty cheap.
But yes, regardless of title, cels can fade if you hang them in well lit rooms. They also will eventually all suffer from vinegar syndrome, but depending on how owners care for the cel, this may not happen in your lifetime.

I believe the paint/cel type used changed sometime in the early 90's iirc and those don't exhibit vinegar syndrome. There are a lot of early cels from the 30's/40's etc still out there in pretty good condition, so they can indeed last quite a long time if taken care of.

Yeah I hear they originally made out of cellulose nitrate, which I suppose is where the name "Cel" comes from. Maybe they last longer, well providing they aren't exposed to naked flames.
