I could have sworn that this series had already received a Japanese-market release years ago? Regardless, I'm all for the title getting more exposure to new audiences. It has a really fun early 00s webcomic aesthetic, and seems like the sort of thing that younger fans of titles like Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-Kun will eat right up.

“Manga” has no special “Japan-made” meaning in Japan, its all just comics. This would indeed be called a manga there because that’s what it is. (In fact that is what its called on the source’s title: “漫画 [manga]『Devil's Candy』….“
Anyway, never read this but very happy for the creators!! I think I remember seeing similar instances of French mangaka’s work being published in JP magazines!

Yep it's the same as calling a 2d Disney film an "anime" over there as well. It's just the way the language works.

I'm so happy for them. I know Rem has had Japanese releases before, but this is great. Devil's Candy is a wonderful manga. Next stop: an anime! =)

It's not so straightforward, though. Indeed, the generic word for "comics" is "manga", but the word "comics" also exists in Japanese, in fact for example American comics are almost exclusively "American comics" (アメリカン・コミックス) or "AmeComi" (アメコミ) - you wouldn't see something by Marvel or DC (or any non-superhero comics) called "manga". It's "comics".* European comics, however, can be called comics or manga, with French and Belgian comics often being referred to by their French name, bandes dessinées (バンド・デシネ) or "b.d." (バデ). Also, webtoons are generally just called "webtoon", regardless of country of origin. So it's not as simple as "all comics are called 'manga' in Japanese". Hell, manga by Japanese authors can be called "comics" - a lot of manga magazines have "comics" in their title (eg. Dengeki Comics), if you check eg. MangaUP's Japanese website it refers to its hosted content as "comics" (コミックス), and in fact, Aokishi's own publishing company, Kadokawa, calls manga "comics" on its website. So it's really a stylistic thing, depending on context and whatnot.
*Of course American comics using a style associated with "Japanese manga", like Devil's Candy, are usually just called "American manga" or along those lines.
Anyway, as a side note on Aokishi, it's quite a fun project, I wish I could afford buying it regularly. If anyone wants to check it out for Devil's Candy, note that there's actually two editions of the mag, version A and version B, they have different content.
