I'm curious. I like Stranger Things so wonder how they'd tackle the project. Could work.
Honestly, I thought Windgard's film was not as bad as some weebs say it is, as it was probably the second best live action Death Note thing lol. It's not some exceptional film, but it was moderately entertaining and arguably has some unique ideas going for it that could have made it better. Plus there's some pretty solid cinematography.
While he probably wasn't the best fit for Death Note, I don't think Adam Wingard is a bad director. He still made flicks like The Guest and You're Next. The latter being one of the best slasher/home invasion films of the past decade. Loved You're Next.
And for real, Japan made 4 live action DN movies and a live action DN TV series. I've seen it all. Only one of those things is better than the Netflix movie. (Death Note 2: The Last Name for those wondering)
It's open season as far as I'm concerned. Could be good, could suck, who knows. But the Duffer Brothers inspire a little confidence.
Still need to watch the final episode of season 4 of Stranger Things.

Is it gonna be as terrible as the U.S remake movie?

I don't know what else to say about these live-action adaptations, jfc. At this point, I just hope Netflix keeps losing money and subscribers.

The licensing rights most likely haven't expired yet.

I really expected exactly this, but for a different manga and novel series from the ‘00’s that got a bad Americanized version featuring Willem Dafoe…
Cirque du Freak… when… the author has been teasing a new adaptation, and it’s just the right moment for it—
Hnnn, maybe we’ll get an anime, which is what it deserves…

I doubt it's another movie, so it might be a TV show. The movie was for the most part an entertainingly dank meme, but its Light was absolutely insufferable. Hopefully this new project has a better-written lead.

Again???
There are so many interesting anime/manga that could be adapted to live action, like Psycho-Pass for example. Why do Death Note again???

Name recognition. Existing fandom for the IP. License probably still Netflix's, they don't have to buy it again. Possible PR opportunities in easy comparison against a badly-received first attempt, saying "WE'RE GONNA DO THIS RIGHT THIS TIME GUYS, WE PROMISE" doing the same thing they did with Cowboy Bebop oooopsss...
Anyway, I'm not a Death Note fan, haven't seen the previous Netflix effort, so I'm feeling just whatever about this. Honestly I think this is another property that would be very easy to adapt to live action, but looking at how they just managed to fail spectacularly with another property that would have been so easy to adapt well, even with changes and whatnot (Cowboy Bebop), yeah, at this point I'll just fetch popcorn and enjoy the show leading up to the actual release of the actual show...

To be fair, Netflix just licensed to stream the movie that WB made... So technically this would be their first crack at Death Note

I wonder what happened to the planned sequel to the 2017 Death Note movie. A sequel with the same writer was actually greenlit and was in development at some point. It looks like this is an entirely new adaptation separate from that film though. I would prefer no new live action Death Notes but I hope they would at least keep the previous movie's actor for Ryuk as he was the only good thing about that movie and fit the character perfectly.
