It's a shame this version is more likely to be published here than the original manga.

The new artwork kinda makes me cringe... I don't know why, but I feel like they're violating a classic. Confused Like when Disney was making sequels to Peter Pan and Cinderella.

Just my two cents.

Uh, as the article says, parts of both Tezuka versions of the manga have been already published in English.

testor: I didn't say in English; I said "here". Those were published in English for the Japan market.

The English versions are only available in Japan as bilingual manga. (Japanese in the bubbles, English translations in the margins.) Princess Knight was never properly brought over to the US.

Shojo Beat was published "here."

Shojo Beat was published "here."

It was a couple of chapters from a multi-volume series not what I would really consider being fulling published in the U.S.

Never said it was "fully." Smile Notice that Gatsu's typical negative first post doesn't sound so dire once all of these goalpost-moving qualifiers are added:

"It's a shame this version is more likely to be published here than the original manga. By "here," I mean "United States," even though the earlier bilingual version was available to American fans at prices below American manga prices, then or now. And by "published," I mean "published, but not published in the most popular English shojo magazine." And by "more likely," I mean "more likely than something that has already been done." Offer void where prohibited."

And you have to go to Kinokuniya to find those import versions, which means S+H would probably bring it back to American prices.

Again, it was only a sample of the manga, not the entire thing.

That was the funny thing. Even with S+H, they were lower than American prices.

Again, the goalposts are moved, in typical fashion. Wink If only you added all of these qualifiers in the first place...but then such a misleading first post couldn't have been posted so hastily, quick-on-the-trigger.

I'm guessing because they're essentially legal scantalations, not necessarily reflecting the style Tezuka was going for like the Shojo Beat version.

Well everyone else seems to have gotten my point, except for you. If you want to be a grammar nazi, then do so in a thread which requires that kind of service from you.

Again with the watered-down qualifiers, posted after the fact.

After the point had to be qualified so much that it was half-irrelevant. It's not just grammar--it's plain misleading. But, glad to help. Smile

Is this adaption going to be wonderful or terrible? Hmm.

I really want to see Princess Knight stateside... Preferably the Tezuka version. This new one is very cutesy as well, but I have my doubts.

The bilingual versions were available from numerous importers, and are reviewed- they translated one of the versions of the series completely [Tezuka did a few versions through the years], I think one of the Nakayoshi versions. So while they were made for the Japanese market, they're not impossible to find, Jason Thompson's Manga Encyclopedia reviews them [I have some of the bilingual Doraemon volumes- where it's all in english, but with side commentary in Japanese to help Japanese people learn english. It's pretty decent].

In addition to that, there's french language version of both the manga and the anime available here in Canada. Here's hoping Vertical or VIZ will translate more of the manga.
