Funny thing is that trope is already extremely rare to nonexistent in almost any modern anime (the ones that exist are parodies of that trope).

Bread appears in so many other guises in anime, and I presume in the lives of many adolescents, that I suspect this is a losing battle. Not to mention fast-food places like McDonalds. Maybe rice is losing out to french fries as well.

By the way, before anyone takes this way too seriously: this is supposed to be a joke, they're not seriously pointing fingers. It's just a tongue-in-cheek commercial urging people to buy more rice.
Note though that in Japan "pan"/"bread" covers a much larger range of products than what "bread" generally means to Western people. It covers various sweet and savory pastries as well as actual bread - eg. melon pan, curry pan, etc. It's usually translated as "bread" in English either due to laziness or just convention, but it's not the same bread as in say, toast. |

"Over the last 50 years, consumption of rice, the main staple in Japanese people’s diets, has halved. "
https://www.nippon.com/en/features/h00257/ Maybe the rice-growers are legitmately worried.
I know that, but still those products are made from wheat, not rice, right? |

Pfft ok I am at least glad that this is more of a tongue in cheek joke. That said I don't think I've seen this trope be used genuinely, in anyway where it wasn't a joke where they ran into a terminator or the bread is replaced with something else.

X to Doubt
I'd blame the western diet for this, not a meme and trope. |

It can be made of wheat or rice flour or anything else; what I was trying to point out is that not all "bread" that you see mentioned in anime/manga set in modern day Japan is the sort of food that is regarded as a competition to rice in cuisine. More often than not it's some sort of pastry - anpan, melon pan, etc, even coronets and the like are technically a kind of "pan". For that matter, I'd bet money that the whole thing started from the washoku ("Japanese cuisine") vs youshoku ("Western cuisine") duality that also includes breakfast: a person may prefer a traditional Japanese style breakfast that is based on rice, or Western style breakfast that includes some sort of bread (toast, sandwich, buns, etc - well, some people will eat sweet pastries for breakfast). And then some closet otaku on the team went "hey, there's that old anime trope" and lo and behold. Last edited by SHD on Thu Jan 27, 2022 3:52 pm; edited 1 time in total |

See the thing is I don't think they're joking. I think they're serious as in they really think that. Which makes it even more laughable in my mind. F you bread!!!! |
