Odd time to announce this. Gonna be an expensive set up. Hope it doesn't get scalped, lol.

Probably too niche to get scalped... Or at least, that's what I hope. The Quest 2 was easy to get, so I'm crossing my fingers this will be the same.

With how niche VR is already, I think THE move for this thing would have been to announce it as a multiplatform piece of hardware that works not just on the PS5 (which is already hard to get and expensive) but also backwards compatibly with PS4 and also fully featured on PC with all kinds of VR software.
If you're on the fence about VR it's definitely harder to justify the price of a piece of hardware like this if you know you're gonna be limited when it comes to how to use it and what you can play on it. But if you knew you could use it for almost anything except for Oculus exclusives I guess, it'd make that decision much easier. Plus the number of potential customers would be a lot bigger too since it would include those who don't have a PS5 and don't even plan to get one.
Of course I realize that exclusivity and selling systems is part of the point but I see something like this kinda more like those Playstation-branded screens they marketed like a decade or so ago. Imagine how ridiculous it'd be if those could only be hooked up to a Playstation and no other console or PC.

Everybody will be playing catch up to Oculus - it just had a monstrous Christmas gift. The trend is going wireless, and it only starts at US$299 without having to buy a PC or console. It was the #1 app (out of all apps, not just VR apps) on iOS

VR is slowly closing the gap from the initial showings even a generation ago. Let’s see if they can deliver some fuller gameplay experiences.

With VR becoming more functional and affordable and big moves to do all kinds of social apps on it, PSVR2 could be poised to be a good alternative if Sony also supports the PC with the device.

Then again, I'd expect Sony to put out two devices, one cheaper one fit for PS5 that is sold close to cost to make revenue through game royalties on the console, and another more premium expensive one specifically for PC that's wireless etc. and sold for profit as they don't make money off the PC space like they do via PS5 and PSN.

I wonder if they'll look to bring back stuff like PSHome, or just let Zuckerberg put up a Meta app on PSN.

Specs for the device are an impressive step forward past the current competitors. Sadly field of vision isn't more than Quest 2's, but more or less the same, which is comfortable enough and better than the original PSVR, but VR will really be great when they can completely wrap your vision around with it rather than having the box/goggle view.

The details are definitely things I was hoping to see. Better visual capabilities, simplified setup (not wireless, but still much simpler than before), and internal tracking.

I'll give the VR developers and hardware makers credit. I thought there was a good chance that there would be a chicken-and-egg scenario where software makers waited on hardware to progress, and that hardware makers would wait until there was enough interest to make stuff for it. They've mostly been progressing together, which is good because you need both sides to convince customers it's worthwhile.
