I understand online service, but why digital sales?

My guess is that it was coming up for a contract renewal between Bandai Namco and Shonen Jump. Low player count frequently results in online portions of games closing, but the single player still being available. However, instances that I can think of where digital sales seemingly stopped out of nowhere for single player games also involved licensed characters. Years ago Activision let several license expire, so things like its Deadpool game disappeared. Scott Pilgrim was unavailable for a long time before a new publisher came in and acquired the rights to it.

I think Bamco decided that sales had dropped off enough that they weren't going to recoup the renewal fees.

I'm not very sure but perhaps it's due to licensing issues, despite Bandai Namco having the rights to many manga series like Dragon Ball, Naruto and One Piece they have to work with other companies like Konami for Yu-Gi-Oh! and I think Sega has the right for Hokuto no Ken, pehaps the deals have expired.
I don't know if Bandai is developing a new Jump crossover game, I hope this time they gave it a higher budget, Jump force felt very low-budget for a game that was made for the 50th anniversary of Shonen Jump. Also, I'm not a huge fan of arena fighters, I think a 2D fighter or platform fighter would be better, I'm not asking it to have the same quality as GG Strive or Smash Ultimate but there's a lot of room for improvement. And as for the roster, I expect them adding characters from Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer

So it says that "logging in" to multiplayer lobbes and ranked matches won't work, but..."online battles" will still work? If at least some of the online multiplayer still functions, this is at least not as bad as it could be.

I'd committ unspeakable crimes to get a high quality 2D fighter for a Jump anniversary, but all of the J-Stars games have been arena fighters, so I don't expect that to change. What I do expect is for the end product to better than J-Stars Victory VS and not worse... obviously I'm looking at you Jump Force.

I'd love a proper 2D sequel to Jump Super/Ultimate Stars. Those games were a ton of fun

So what if you've got the digital copy already? Will they take it off the system with a refund or let you play just without all the support and all?

Too bad for those with the Switch version considering it's still new somewhat having come out almost 14 months ago.

They have a FAQ for all the details, but no, they won't be taking away your copy and you should still be able to download it again if you need to without any issues. This only affects new sales and most of the online play

Good. I don't play it as much anyway, I just didn't want to take it off the lineup on my Switch and not get it back if I wanted. I admit, I do like the game. I just don't have much time to play that one much. >.> Animal Crossing has me hostage.
