I bet they got confused with Anno making the Shin Ultraman film as an Anime.

I wouldn't mind something fun from Anno. He'll return to military sci-fi eventually too? I think he's reached that stage where he goes his own pace.

According to this report that Khara denied, an unnamed studio staff member had said that Anno was working on a "new version" of an iconic work by a nationally renowned anime film director whom everyone knows.

It's pretty clear what this "staff member" is implying. I wouldn't mind it, but IMO Anno should take his time with doing things he likes before returning to anime. Especially since the work in question deserves special attention, if it ever gets remade.

Can you elaborate? I have no idea what he's implying.

At this point I wonder if he even cares about producing new original anime (which is always risky)...

If he is creating new anime until he's ready to announce it it's no biggie.

Almost certainly Nausicaa, since he was a key animator on the original and people at Ghibli have mentioned they wouldn’t mind him doing a full adaptation of the manga.

I would be 100% in favor of him doing a full adaptation of the manga.
Doesn't take away from the original movie, and Miyazaki is still around to make sure it's up to his standards.
But with the pace khara works, it probably wouldn't be done for another decade.
