The kitty snuggles in this volume are SO cute. I somehow missed picking up v1 but decided to dive into this volume anyway and (after catching up on the intro plot from the sample on JNovel Club) I was so happy to take in the story in this fully-illustrated version by aki. Eager for more!!

I'm kind of surprised this manga doesn't get more hate. I mean, I thought it was cute, but the idea of a dragon ikemen that just wants to pet cute kitties all the time has similar energy to fangirls squeeing over cute catboys, the kind of thing that tends to receive a lot of eye-rolls from everyone who isn't into that, or at least from my experience.

Admittedly the translation I read of the original light novel was questionable, but while the manga gives me vibes like it's kind of intentionally over-the-top and not meant to be taken too seriously, the light novel gave me the impression it was taking itself completely seriously even though it was even moreso a shakily written and silly Mary Sue fantasy.

While I definitely wouldn't call them well written, I wouldn't say that the official translations make Ruri a Mary Sue. I think they still have an intentionally over-the-top element to them, especially where Jade and his officials are concerned, as well as with the spirits/fairies. My biggest complaint (and I'm current through volume 4) is that Kureha can't wrap up a subplot for beans, and I'm hoping the manga can fix that somewhat.

It doesn't really feel Mary Sueish to me, given that the main hallmark of that is being arbitrarily loved by practically everyone in the story. (Though the Kirito Effect has somewhat redefined it as a main character who's excessively powerful). That's true of Asahi, because of her magical hypnotic powers, but not of Ruri--she gets doted on because the fairies are obsessed with her, not because people necessarily like her (other than the king).

So, she's a Mary Sue to the fairies, but humans/dragons seem more afraid of her than anything else (while also hoping to think of a way to use her power to their advantage), which is kind of an interesting twist on the concept. There's also a bit in volume 2 implying that she may not be the only person from her world with this sort of power.

Well, people don't really agree on what makes a character a Mary Sue these days, but she has some of the obvious characteristics like unusual hair and eye color, and the most desirable guy in the story falling for her immediately, but mostly what makes me say she seemed Mary Sue-ish to me is that in the LN (though again, the translation I read was questionable), spoiler[but she seemed mostly chill with starting a war,] and the morality of this was never questioned, which felt to me like the sort of moral dissonance I'd expect from a Mary Sue type character, who is always right because the author wants it to be so.

Any plans on the LN getting a review? I read them and very much enjoy the series.

I think this may mostly come down to the translation you read - from J-Novel Club's version, I didn't get that impression at all; in fact, spoiler[Ruri is very concerned about the people of Nadasha and isn't even sure she wants Asahi and the others punished.] I also think it's interesting that only the most desirable guy falls for her. There's no reverse harem here, and in fact in the fourth book spoiler[the new hot guy is blatantly disinterested in her.]

@LegitPancake
I'll add it to my future plans!
