I'd heard there was some dissatisfaction with the manga's ending - I've never read it, so I'd be curious to hear if that's an oversimplification. I was initially left with the impression that maybe they were making changes to address that.
But either way, the deterioration here was pretty shocking, and I say that as someone who was onboard for most of this season, maybe for longer than others even. I have to wonder what the point was, since, yeah, it feels like they were just getting it done for the sake of getting it done. What a shame. |

While I'm glad I dropped this anime by the end of the first season (it was good, but not great), I mainly feel emphatetic towards those who stuck with it only to be disappointed at the end. I certainly know the feeling, though in my case it usually happens with lesser known series so in a way my expectations are more grounded beforehand since there's little hype involved.

It's been a long time since I saw an anime fail this badly.
Each episode kept getting worse. I was hoping for a hype ending. The manga was way better even if the manga had a weird ending. The season 2 finale was such a huge disappointment. It left an awful taste in my mind. Definitely not buying season 2 blu-ray set. I feel bad for Aniplex who will have to deal with poor sales. Season 2 will end up as the season that never happened. That's if they want to make a 3rd season? Any bets if they resurrect it? |

I feel bad for the animators who had to work on this. The ending of the final episode made it clear that they were pressed for time

Pet peeve of mine, I hate when people go "This season/adaptation/squeal was so bad I don't want to remember it existed" or was TV Tropes calls it "Fanon Discontinuity". IMO it's just important to remember the bad as well as the good(haven't seen the season myself, just going by word of mouth). Also, wasn't the reason this season deviated from the manga was because the author told them to. Correct me if I'm wrong. |

I don't know how true that claim about the author is but S2 doesn't really deviate from the source material. It cut whole arcs and characters out while still rushing the material. It would be more accurate to call it a very bad abridged version of the manga. Has anyone watched DBZ abridged kai? This was sort of like that but not at all entertaining. |

Regarding that, relevant passage from this article:
So it appears the manga author helped with changes to the story this season, but then notably their name isn't on the last two episodes (and neither is anyone else's, apparently). Usually not a sign of anyone being particularly proud of how things went. Really makes you wonder what was going on behind the scenes. Praying to God it gets the Brotherhood treatment at some point. They cut out my favorite arc, and omitted some really great characters. This second season was an absolute travesty. Which is a shame because the first two episodes had real promise. I still have to finish the last 80 chapters of the manga, but man did the anime do a good job at botching my anticipating for that.

Honestly.. what the hell was that?! I haven't been this disappointed in an anime series ending since they botched rozen maiden's ending in the second season.. Even then they left that series open to come back. The same can not be said about TPN

I've only watched up to the penultimate episode of this season, and was already so deeply disappointed (and I think feeling James B.'s pain vibrating through the media multiverse) that I hadn't worked up the courage to watch the finale yet. Between this thread and the replies on the main series ANN thread, maybe I'll just induce long-term memory loss and try to pretend there was only ever a season 1..

I haven't even seen this yet, but from everything I've gathered, people need to absolutely get shit-canned over this. Like, this is utterly inexcusable. The first season was a 10/10 masterpiece of tension and creeping horror...and then to actively take a massive shit over all of it like this? What a complete travesty. The entire fandom is owed an explanation of who or what is responsible for this trainwreck.

As has been said by others, the anime REALLY speedran through everything past chapter 37 or so: no showdown with the demon aristocracy, no interaction between Emma and The One and his dragon (past that one image in the slideshow), and lots of characters removed or heavily glossed over (I wanted more bagman Zazie!). Some things stayed the same between the anime and manga spoiler[Peter Ratri did himself in; the exit to the human world is in Grace Field; Mujika's magical blood and coronation ] with a few exceptions spoiler[ Isabella abruptly dies in the manga but lives in the anime ] , but soo much more was skipped over or removed altogether spoiler[ for example: Goldy Pond and everyone attached to it ] . The manga's final arc had serious pacing issues and a rushed ending, but Season 2 was essentially an emptier and even more rushed version of that rushed ending. I'd suggest that anyone disappointed by the anime's ending either read the manga from the beginning or pick up where Season 1 left off. |

This anime adaptation was as bad as Tokyo Ghoul. But not worse than Hakyu Hoshin Engi.

My guess is that Mamoru Kambe dropping out of the production - an assumption based on the fact that he didn't have any hands-on involvement beyond the chief director post after episode 5 - definitely had something to do with it. |
