Animators really would need their own union, though the fact a lot of them are freelance makes it a bit complicated. Come to think of it, do they have one?

There are organizations that help them, but no union.
My big disappointment with this study is that it doesn't include any sort of control for comparison. There's no comparison to another industry in particular, or the average Japanese worker.
Regardless of the lack of context that would be given by such a comparison, the numbers are pretty depressing.

The sad thing is that the Japanese industry got its first major boom because American animators unionized and the toymakers realized their dollar would go further there.
I bet anything a lot of companies and studios worry that if they unionize when demand is at such a high, Korea and a China will be the beneficiaries.

The diet and sleep restrictions are a sign of abuses (the latter is also a thing in the idol industry, look at what the sleep restrictions did to Kanna Hashimoto, she went for the bottle when she got older). Is it so hard to make sure a company's talent get at least 6-8 hours of sleep a day.
As for the social media, you got to have a thicker skin when it comes to the judging or get off of social media like quite a few Hollywood actors did.

Makes me sad to see that even one person is contemplating suicide because of their job. Mental health is nothing to snuff at, but there should be something in place for those who are feeling this way about their career choice.
