IDK man, it does seem like its going for the Gabriel DropOut, but Gabriel Drop actually had charm and humor. This first episode didn't make me laugh once. Maybe episode 2.

Ash has much better one liners than that. Actually, the Evil Dead bit in the episode might be more apt than the show thinks of just showing Yurine in having a grim sense of humour, because the franchise really became a crazy dark humour and bloody comedy, that is right at home with what a lot of this episode did. I say this as a pretty big fan of Ash vs Evil Dead, although it took me a while to really get into the "bloody" comedy, so I think I can get into it here. This does feel kind of in the vein of things like Punie-chan and Dokura, shows I like, so I am in. I do think that there was a bit of imperfection in this first episode though, like it could have done better without introducing all the characters. I do like the angel character though, like how solemn she looks, and that if she felt bad just being at a table with devils, I am pretty sure eating one would be worst.
The 4th wall jokes were perhaps the best. I liked that she said her internal monologue because I noticed that her lips were moving instead of it supposed to being in her head, so it was a funny twist. |

I personally thought the over the top comedy was funny especially the character reactions.
I'm somewhat confused why they decided to start off the first episode in such a random way rather than just from the very beginning. However, I don't think it matters that much considering the nature of the plot in this series. |

Episode 11 (finale)
Okay, finished Drop Kick on my Devil!. Hardly been a popular show I think, and actually creates some conflicting thoughts on it in terms of quality. The thing is that I wanted to like this show, I wanted it to be great, and funny, and something fun to look back on. But I also see all sorts of problems, that I really want to bring up to who might care to read this, before I talk about what I liked. First of all, this show had a real problem with its premise, which is to say it feels like we are starting several episodes into it without it being shown to us. We are told that Yurine has summoned Jashin-chan, which is preventing her from going back to hell, which means Jashin-chan's devil friends are also around, and we are also told that the angel, Pikora, lost her Halo and is stuck on Earth, but again not shown it. Honestly, it really sucks that we don't have what feels like proper introductions. I just looked up info on the series and learned that Yurine is apparently a college student, but I don't think that popped up anywhere in the show, so was news to me, Yurine kind of does not actually do anything. The last episode itself looked like it was going to go into Yurine's loneliness, in an explanation for the series premise in why she summoned Jashin-chan, but it stopped just short of doing so. I want to kind of lean into a positive, in that there is a way we have the premise shown to us, which I think is actually good, it is through the OP. I don't think it really is anything fancy, in terms of animation quality it does the job, but tonally I think it actually manages a really good job of putting together its conflicting tones of being screwball, dark, cute, and mix those three together into odd combinations. It drills the premise well into you, and I think is actually one of the more catchy songs of this season, which it does through shifting through its tones, in a way that feels distinctively itself. It works with some character that I like. I would not say the show itself always works, there are a number of dead spots in the show, notably I would say when the weird background devil makes some sort of pun in a way that feels too detached from the rest of the show, and really never adds anything. The jokes in general are I would say hit and miss, and this is from someone who can often forgive not everything being quite working. But, I actually think that this is not all a problem with maybe mismatched characterization from something like voice direction, because I think it certainly was not. Sure Jashin-chan could be trash, in being despicable while the cast of Asobi Asobase gets praised for its horrid characters, but I think she was actually voiced pretty great for her character, and generally fun. And I would actually expand it out to the rest of the cast too, even as much as I said Yurine does not really do anything she is still a fun character. The same with Pekora, although I feel said for her character always treated badly. I am not sure if it was actually the case, whether it was a joke, but towards the end of the show it said that they had run out of material, saying that it was a crisis. I am not sure if it is true, but it did feel like that it did things like randomly slip in references to other series, that felt like perhaps there was more freedom in just having fun, and it was kind of better than earlier stuff. I would not say quite worth forcing yourself through everything. Adding more fuel to this, later episodes even wildly changed season with going from hot summer to cold winter, but oddly better than earlier parts that could fall flat. Still don't see the point of the random devil that was looking for Jashin-chan though, that character was pointless, the police woman honestly was not that interesting either, except when it kind of acknowledged how unfitting odd she was. Not to draw it out much more, I want to give a rating of Decent (6/10), being an uneven experience, but some parts that are actually pretty entertaining if you can feel some appeal in it. |

Season 2, Episodes 1-11 (final)
Well. I am a little disappointed that I somewhat expected that I could look forward to watching an episode of this show once a week, but also stands apart that they pretty much released the entire season all at once. Added onto bits that this season was even more meta than the first, with characters not just breaking the fourth wall but using it as a prop, such as commenting on what episode it was and stuff. The 10th episode was also pretty much the finale, which had one of its meta jokes halfway through where Jashin-chan commented that they already did everything to feel like a finale. The 11th episode was itself a kind of special or recap, meta in how it started off the episode pointing out how petty it was an attempt to call itself a special, the entire thing not only had no real new footage, but they really blatantly used past footage to match everything said that it was kind of funny. Wait, there was a bit about someone called Azusa 2, who never appeared, a deer of some kind. They even included the trailer for the first season that was incredibly deceptive in making it look serious and explaining why Yurine wears an eyepatch. Maybe binging most of this season at once was a bit much, but dang do I enjoy this show. The OP and ED were weaker this time, but I was also kind of just looking forward to its brand of somewhat often mean spirited but also aware humour that feels no shame in some cute things, mixed with blood. I think that it does have a sweet spot that is all the more so when it knows that it could easily just be more cynical. This season also added some new characters; another angel, Jiangshi and panda sisters, along with it feeling like Persephone 2nd having more parts, almost at times feeling like too much. I think one of my favourite parts of the season was when the young Yuki-onna was spoiler[missing so they called the police girl if she could help, and after the call finding out that the police girl had in fact kidnapped her]. The whole ordeal feeling much darker than it really should respectfully be so. Especially when brought back with Jashin-chan being bought in another episode. As much as this was an odd experience as someone who generally watches shows weekly rather than binging, I enjoyed it. My rating is Good (7/10), not sure in comparison to the first it was more quality overall (I kind of feel it was) or just that I knew what I was getting into and/or wanted some silly fun, but I feel comfortable to say it is worth seeing rather than how I previously saw the first season as uneven. |

Interestingly enough, Jashin-chan Dropkick's manga was written and released first, by an entire 20 months (April 2012) vs Gabriel DropOut (December 2013). I found both shows equally funny, just in different ways. Yeah, I know it's an old post. |
