This show is probably the funniest of the season and easily the most self aware. Frankly, it's no worse than what Amazon presented in The Boys . spoiler[dude gets blown up by a explosive suppository, but cartoon slime sex is a bridge too far?] . I don't blame Funimation or some of the other outlets, though. It's not their wheelhouse.

On a side note
Stunk is still regularly sexually harassing Meidori, the birdmaid waitress at the pub they frequent, which is clearly non-consensual. To say that everything in the show is consensual and it doesn't play into any normal ecchi show stereotypes is unfortunately wrong.

True, but unlike in most ecchi shows, he's not getting away with it. Each time it happens he's clearly shown to be crossing a boundary of acceptable behavior and he gets swift retribution for it.

The retribution doesn't necessarily negate him doing it is played for laughs. Plus, it's a pretty common anime trope for pervy characters (intentional or not) to be physically punished for their sexual harassment by a woman.

Not gonna say Stunk's actions are a damnable offense on the show (clearly very few people care about this aspect, it's not what's getting it cancelled, and it's adult fiction anyways), but I don't think Reviewers is necessarily the consensual flag flying show people like to champion it as.

First I've even heard of this show but doing some research on it and the stuff around it this sounds, like, genuinely gross. I can take a sex comedy - Shimoneta is absolutely hilarious - but this just feels really disgusting and pretty much dripping with all kinds of horrible, "Women are objects," vibes. I'm really not surprised everybody is cancelling this thing.
I'll add my voice that you should watch the show before deciding how much "horrible" it is, as it is a good sex comedy similar to Shimoneta in spirit. There are instances where characters specifically talk about NOT objectifying women and that a successful sexual encounter is one where your partner's pleasure is key. Elsewhere the show portrays the "reviewers" as enacting that concept, no women get hurt (sometimes the reviewers do...) everyone has some sort of pleasure and it's all consensual. When the show shows Midiri being teased (harrassed?) the perp(s) get severe punishment thus showing the audience that sort of male behavior is not to be tolerated. And, unlike Plunderers, the harassment is very infrequent and not an integral component of the show so it's clear it's not intended to be normalized. I rate it well worth a watch for discerning adults...

Geez, peoples standards flip flop all the time. One day they are calling things like the "slut walk" empowering and another day they call an anime reviewing prostitutes fictional offensive.

I don't know how to tell you this, but slut walks are organized by real human beings who choose to participate in them, while fictional sex workers are, y'know, fictional. Also, on a more personal note I haven't watched this series and I have no intention of ever doing so, but I'd never call a show where some of the women are drawn with tits larger than their torso "empowering".

Please do not pretend like you have no idea about why a comedy show based on making jokes out of prostitution would have some very problematic aspects.

For balance, what bothers me about this show is how it divorces itself from the very real, horrible truths of prostitution both forced (sexual slavery) and "voluntary(?)" and it is worrisome that it might encourage supporting prostitution (not good IMO) but if one keeps fully in mind it is escapist comedic fantasy I think there should be no problems watching and enjoying.

Just remember that amounts to "I can judge a book by it's cover and I am damn proud about doing so".

That would be no different than One Piece encouraging Piracy in the seven seas (yeah, it still exists in the 21st century). The simple truth is that in the real world you need to be really desperate to attempt any of the two when you have better options.

It is just me or those this feels like they are desperately trying to put the genie back in the bottle? At this point the only thing they are doing is giving tons of free publicity and encouraging people to see what all the fuzz is about.

While things like human trafficking and sexual slavery are indeed horrible it is absurd to suggest that all incidences of prostitution involve either.

Like many other vices such as drugs or alcohol trying to stamp out prostitution is both impossible and counterproductive because it forces the vice into a black market. Allowing prostitution to openly exist reduces its potential for harm and improves safety for everyone involved.

Well said. I respect the fact that everyone is entitled to their own opinion on Reviewers, but slapping labels on a show that one hasn't even watched is both willfully ignorant and prejudicial.

So we can finally put the "rawr FUNi is horrible!" narrative to bed, right?

If people want to watch it, they'll find ways to do so. Meh.

Not at all. If the japanese TV stations had canceled the series and then funimation had followed suit then no one would have said anything, but as things stand one has to question whether Tokyo MX and Kobe Sun would have cancelled if Funimation (which now belongs to Sony) had not.

More on topic tho,
I wonder how this is effecting Passione's bottom line. I can't imagine this show is going to end up profitable until the physical media drop.

I'm also casually waiting on who decides to nab the home video rights over here.

...so you really think these networks canceled their broadcasts because of the actions of an American anime distributor they've probably never heard of, and not because they realized too late that the series is straight-up porn?

Unless Passione is on the production committe, they are not affected at all, they get paid a fixed amount and that is the end of it.

My bet is that Funimation will pull an Aniplex and not publish this at all.

Kind of reminds me of GANTZ's anime TV airing in Japan where there was the regular version, the uncensored version, and the even more uncensored version. I can't remember if any channels canceled it outright, though...
