Have you ever watched an anime series, and at first hated it, but eventually grew to like it as it went on? I've heard plenty of instances where people started liking a show, but then got bored/disgusted with it, and I wondered just how frequently the opposite was true.
For me, it would have to be Boogiepop Phantom. I rented the first disc once, and I just absolutely hated it. It was too disjointed, it had no point, it was unsettling, the screen was too damned dark, there were seemingly no central characters, and I just couldn't stand it. A few weeks later, though, I was chatting with a friend of mine from Australia who convinced me to give the show a second chance. So reluctantly, I rented the entire series...and I absolutely fell in love with it! The show just came together so well as it went on, and now it's one of my all-time favourite anime, no question about it.
So anyway, how about the rest of you?

At first, I didn't grab on to X too well. It's been so long since I hated it I don't even remember why I did in the first place. But it has long since been one of my top five favorites for anime, especially with its super-slick animation.

When I first saw Initial D, I didn't like it too much because of the character designs but by the end of the first season, I appreciated the unique designs more and more.
With the Shaman King anime (Japanese audio only), at first I didn't like any of the characters or really anything about it at all. After a while it grew on me. Especially the relationship between Yoh and Anna. I thought it was very unique for anime. Even tho she pushed him to the limits to train him, there was no question about the love that they shared. I thought it was refreshing to see a female character that was actually sure of herself and not afraid to admit the emotions she felt.
OT: 24 season two started off very boring for me but soon became very enjoyable.

When I first watched Lain, I really didn't want to stick with it at all. But, after I got through about 6 episodes, it started to get interesting.
Not sure if this is applicable, but I was really reluctant to watch Castle of Cagliostro, because I'm not a fan of the Lupin series. However, I watched it, loved it, and it's now one of my faves.

The best I can say is Urusei Yatsura. I first saw it (random episodes) 3 years ago when I was a DBZ otaku and didn't know any better (seriously, I thought it was stupid cause it was a cartoon not an anime ). Hadn't seen it since. This year I saw it was a "limited" box set deal and immediately grabbed it up and I really enjoy it. I rarely love/hate anything.

I agree with you about Boogiepop. I didn't like not being able to remember half the characters names, and seeing a few characters only once or twice, but by the end it all came together for me. I thought they ended it quite well for such a disorienting series.

Ditto with BoogiePop. It was confusing for me at first, and the art isn't exactly appealing so I quit watching it. But thanks to a few individuals I gave the series another shot and I can't believe I had given up on such a great anime. The story really captivated me and after a few eps I really got into the show. The same with Crest of the Stars. One of the best space operas I've seen.
I have to say that Tokyo Babylon didn't appeal to me the first time I watched it. But I saw it when I was new to the whole anime thing, so it didn't catch me. But after I saw it again recently, I realized how it tied in with X. I really like it now.

Hmm... Initial D for me as well... I thought the designs were ugly and really disliked the CG work done on the cars... but the story and intensity grew on me as well
And on a stranger note (because it tops as my favorite series now of all time) would be Maison Ikkoku. Of course, the problem with that one was that I rented a tape of it and It wound up being episodes 13-14 and English dubbed no less. Now to be perfectly honest, this is not the kind of series you start in the middle of. In addition, I still consider the MI dub to be one of the worst dubs produced in the past 15 or so years. (not necessarily the worst, but IMNSHO, it's a stinker.)
Then I was able to aquire the whole thing fansubbed and fell in love with the series...
Of course, now that it's coming out on DVD, I'm more than pleased to buy it that way.

Naruto. I first didn't even intend on watching it since I hated the whole tournament themed anime and stuff, and just thought it was another DBZ, but my friend kept trying to get me to watch it, so I watch the first 5 eps, and went meh, not to spectacular, not great, but THEN my friend force fed it to me, and when the Haku arc finished, I was a changed girl. Now you won't find a bigger Naruto fangirl.

Yes, the end of that first arc was amazing. If it had ended there I would have given it a masterpiece rating. Too bad.
I went in expecting Boogiepop to be good (thanks to Nagisa and the rest ) and disjointed so I was prepared, otherwise who knows.
And I remembered Lupin (on CN) I didn't care for it, but I grew into it. Also Gundam Wing, I didn't really like it and stopped watching it, but one boring afternoon I sat down and watched the recap episode(s) right in the middle and I was hooked. I must say I have a more positive view of recap episodes because of it...except in DBZ.

Nope, I can't think of a single Family Guy experience I've had with Japanese anime, where I grew to like something I once derided. I had a better opinion of Akira once I rewatched it with the re-release (good 4/5ths of a film with a mess of an ending), but I never hated it.

I would have to say Trigun. I didn’t like the first couple of episodes. It just seemed too silly at first. I didn’t really care whether Vash wanted to kill or not. I just didn’t like the concept at the time. A couple of friends of mine had mentioned how serious it was towards the end, so I gave it another chance. Now, I’m not going to say I love it too death or anything but, I can certainly say that I appreciate the series a lot more.
