I admit I haven't made it to V.3-6 yet. My discs are still waiting for a few other items to ship. But I just wanted to say, at least from the first volume, that I thought the animation and art, and clarity was pretty darn stellar. I mean frankly from 1983, I was expecting much worse(because it is so old), and I would say this looks better than many shows made in the 90's. Don't get me wrong, it is still a TV show, but I was pleased.

Since I haven't seen the volumes that were reviewed yet, I will stop there. But I can't wait to get to that point. Just had to say that. As these kind of shows, as silly as they sometimes can be, is sometimes a very welcome relief from some of the more modern interpretations.

I've watched disc 3-4 ( got the rest of the series ordered) and the plot is getting serious as the Mu continue to encroach on Chilum territoryand the mayor powers want to use Kei to remake the world in their image or do it by other means and having Kei terminated, I'm glad ImaginAsian released this classic mecha show alongside Remi and Cat's Eye and hoping for new releases from them. Cool

(complete with Marie Antionette and Joan of Arc, never mind that the two lived nearly half a millennia apart)

Well, these are supposed to be spoiler[alternate reality] versions of the same women.

a tribe of horseback barbarians who attack an airship with stone axes (but are scared off by Javiet's dragon-like appearance)

I thought that was dumb, too. But them even hijacking the ship was dumb. It felt like that "Crimson Permanent Assurance" sketch from Meaning of Life.

It also marks an intensification of the central romantic triangle, during which Sley defies all expectation by becoming a serious romantic rival, anchoring some surprisingly emotional scenes.

When you prefer Sley over Kei, you know the show's got problems.

Athena will be sweetness and light one moment (all the better for Kei to put the moves on her, despite the fact that she's a dead ringer for his lover who he knows bore him a full-grown Chilum daughter), and the next she's hell-bent on destroying him, despite Olsen's (her mentor) warning that Kei is her father.

I'm still surprised the incest/Elektra Complex angle got used at all in the show! Yeah, I know they get away with that stuff in general in Japan, but you'd figure the sponsors would want to avoid non-action risque scenes which would keep little kids from buying snacks and toys. With Macross, that kind of stuff is kept to a minimum.

It's wildly uneven, sometimes badly recorded, and to be appreciated only by hardcore completists or fans of ripe camp.

Don't forget to add people who had to wait 15 years to finish it through the USR version.
