Screw Shadow Chronicles, Screw Love Live Alive, I just wanted a proper dub of Macross Delta on Netflix. |
It is strange that someone decided to make Macross the target of their lifelong vendetta. I doubt that this agreement even makes financial sense and the only thing it does is prevent a legal western release of the recent Macross series.

Pretty much; that movie is NEVER seeing the light of day. Agram can claim it's coming over and over again, but it will never enter production or pre-production.

So I never really did think about it, but how did Macross Plus escape the clutches of HG when everything else hasn't?

If I'm recalling correctly both Macross Plus and Macross II got threw a legal Loophole that HG then fixed around the same time they trademark'd the terms for Macross and UN Spacy.

Seriously!? I've been wondering recently who was going to get SDFM when this license was due to expire and now I hear that these utter idiots have extended the license!?
For those who don't know, Harmony gold also owns the license for the UK.

So do they need the licenses to those three show in order for Macross to exist? The whole thing is bizarre, it's almost like they have some sense of ownership over the whole thing and feel that loosing the license is wrong.

Well, that's absolutely infuriating. To go out of their way to block the originals at this stage in the game is just beyond insulting. Let the license die already. It's been over 30 years. Let the license die.

Is it remotely possible for Harmony Gold to remaster Robotech in HD video? I understand they had to do substantial alterations in Southern Cross to make it seem like it was set on Earth. Otherwise I don't see why they would pay for a license renewal. Anyone who wants Robotech on DVD probably already has it. |
Even if they did they would probably just do an upscale of the version with the changed sound effects and not the original TV edit.

Of course not. I read it as HG simply not having any rights to anything other than the original series, so everything else could theoretically be up for grabs. Although HG's stranglehold is Tatsunoko's fault, so even if that's the case, Tatsunoko would probably still find a way.
Seriously, are the royalties really that good, or is there just an executive with some incredible beef?

This is why I support anything Macross related that Japan releases with English subs - the entire Delta bluray collection, the Macross Plus OVA bluray with the dub OVA and sub movie, and the Frontier 30th Shooting Star movie set.
If I can show Japan that importers will support the extra sales that including English subs will bring in, unquestionably I'm gonna buy it all. Screw HG, and especially screw HG when Japan is willing to give English speaking fans an option of official subtitles.

This news doesn't change anything. It simply restates that Harmony Shit continues to have the license to SDF Macross (1982-1983 tv show and only this one) for the next couple of decades. That is all. They don't own the concept, the characters, the music etc... They don't own the sequels or prequels, ovas and what have yous. Even the name Macross which was trademarked by these bastards is being challenged across the world and they're losing it country by country to Big West. They already lost it for the UK. So come 2021 without the protection afforded by the trademark of the name Macross other companies are well within their rights to sell Macross merchandise locally. Wether that be toys, or tv series like Macross 7, or even better Macross Frontier or Delta.

I bet the folks at Studio Nue and Big West are not going to be happy about this.

This is beyond disgusting and amazing, it's clearly an attempt at another money grab by those crooks and I wonder how they managed to survive this long. Many fans outside Japan have waited for nearly a lifetime to see this costly farce of a blockade/embargo/stranglehold die and the IPs revert back to BW so that everyone could have the pleasure of having real and legit Macross content, only to be given this outrageous insult.

Not even a money laundering scandal could bring them down, so not even that may be enough.
