In Indonesia here, the censorship is only tight for nudity or bad language. The government doesn't really care about the content or violence. For example, a 13 to 17-year-olds can walk into cinemas watching an R-rated movie by themselves.
Most people (especially in my country) associate cartoon, anime in particular, is for children's consumption. So, they will air everything that is cartoon-related, whether it's a US production or anime in the children's TV programme as long as it doesn't contain vulgar nudity. Can you imagine, they air The Simpsons, Sin-chan, Inuyasha, Gundam Seed, Full Metal Panic in the children's slot. I mean, those titles are at least for teenagers. Well, I'm not a parent yet, but I have nephews and nieces who are only in elementary school. I've been wanting to watch anime together with them and when I went through my anime collection, I couldn't find any title that is appropriate to their age. Most of the animes I have in my collection have difficult plots, or they are violent. I'm not even sure if they would understand Cardcaptor Sakura or Naruto-which I don't think is suitable for children less that 13 years old. I think the only anime suitable for elementary school children are the long-running Doraemon and Chibi Maruko-chan because they are not that difficult to understand and they teach children some important values. Is there anything else? Are there any parents out here? Do any of you who have children let them watch anime? I'm just curious. Thanks |

Im not a mother yet but I am an aunt and I do let them watch anime whenever there over (5 nieces and a nephew). I let them watch Sailor Moon. Well.. the edited version at least.. and I let them watch Pokemon and Yotsuba. Those animes are age appropriate I know (well, as I said, the edited version of Sailior Moon.)

I once wanted to watch Ichigo Mashimaro with them, since the characters are still in elementary school, but then I thought about it again, and realize that children won't get the jokes.
Actually, the sports anime genre is quite okay for them, but the fanservice just ruin everything. |

I don't have any children and most of the anime I watch is for teenagers and adults.
The only anime I can think of is My Neighbor Totoro Last edited by samuraiwalt on Mon Jan 14, 2008 4:11 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Here is an older thread from a while back asking for child-safe anime that might help.

Kodocha carries only a TV-PG rating in the U.S. (which means it's considered safe for all but the youngest of kids), focuses mostly on elementary school characters, and has lots of lively antics, so it would probably be a safe view for the elementary school crowd.
The other one that immediately springs to mind is Hare+Guu, which also carries a TV-PG rating and focuses on an elementary-school protagonist. Some of the humor might go over the heads of children, but there's plenty enough in the series that they would get to keep them entertained. If you're talking about slightly older girls then Princess Tutu might be worth a try. It carries a stiffer rating because it can get a bit dark and intense in its later stages, but I'd consider it appropriate for girls 10+. (Boys at that age might find it too blatantly girly.) |

I'm not a mother but I remember what I liked to watch when I was in elementary school.
Sailor Moon - back then it was my favourite series. Other anime I remember liking are: The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Anne of Green Gables, A Little Princess Sara, Trapp Ikka Monogatari, Candy Candy, Mahōtsukai Sally TV 2. |

I have three boys (currently 4, 8 and 11) who have been spoon-fed anime pretty much all their lives. You may find my list of kid-safe anime useful.

I guess you could show them Pokemon, Digimon, or maybe Spirited Away. Those are the ones that come to mind.
I used to watch DBZ uncut in Spanish when I was around 7 years old, so maybe they can watch Naruto. They might not understand it, but they'll at least be interested. |

I too have three children- 3, 6, and 12. The twelve year old likes stuff like Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note, although I admit that I've only watched a couple of episodes of Naruto and Bleach and stereotyped them as typical shonen type shows that I was not interested in. the six year old I am more selective with, but we watched Princess Tutu together. (She's a girl. That might be important to point out.) I've mentioned a bunch of times on here that she was really into Tokyo Mew Mew when it was on tv. They've all seen most of the Ghibli movies, although the youngest really didn't care much. He's all of a sudden really excited about Speed Racer, though.
So yes, I let them watch the anime. abunai's list is really good, though. |

I always watched Astro Boy when I was younger, this was the mid-80s classic, also Voltron and Transformers.
Astro was and is a true classic, the day that particular series ended and spoiler[Astro dies, if I remember it right kids were crying all over my primary school, it was a very popular series]
|

it's not so much anime that you should be worried about (mainstream wise) but movies... Frankly so i've seen so many violent movies (living in the US, we have pretty loose ratings on violence in most things) that violence no longer effects me.
I read about how the first episode of Elfen Lied was over the top graphically violent and gory, and when I was it I was disappointed because it wasn't as violent as I expected... Thats just me though, having watched hundreds of hours of overtly violent movies before seeing any graphic violence in anime... I don't really get the difference between violence and action, really. Is action violence; or is violence action? If you said "that anime is really action packed" would it be like saying "that anime is really violent"? I don't know. Assuming that the kids probably won't be overtly exposed to violence in the media (as compared to in the US) I would say that they would be more shocked by violence in anime than the average American viewer. (not concrete though, since I really dont know much about life in India) ... I guess that all really didn't awnser your question very well being as I just rambled with no objective. truth is I know nothing about non-violent anime so I can't really help you but... ... (switches ramble mode on) If you don't want them to be shocked when their older than you should let them see some violence. many shows (including anime) that are rated for teens are primarly targeted (or so I preceive) at pre-teens, and most R rated movies and some 18+ anime would probably be targeted at teens... rule of thumb; dont go by how it's rated by the people who rate things because they are ultra-sensitive on purpose as not to offend anybody. in my opinion I think that most 'mature' animes are fine for teens to watch as long as they have maturity and don't go quoting everything they hear... whats worse? violence or sex? why? ask yourself that question. to the ratings board, sex is worse than violence. I don't know why, really, but thats just how things panned out. most parents would probably let their teens to see somebody being shot at multiple times, stabbed, beaten profusely, have a gun put to their head, strangled, spree kill, slice, dice, and let the gore flow rather than let them see a movie that has sex in it. so which is worse? obviously you cant let them see an anime that has tons of sex in it, because society deems that offensive for their own reasons and they would be rejected and deemed immoral, but if you let them see animes that have violence in them, theres nothing wrong with you or them and its perfectly normal. ... i know i didn't even come close to answering your question but i had to get that off my chest and this thread seemed like the best place to dump my unorganized pile of words. |

There are quite a few non violent anime that I would consider to contain "sexual content" which is appropriate for their teenage target audience. Kids above a certain age are aware that breasts exist and the word "sex" means more than kissing, so I don't see a problem with a show making jokes or references about such themes. The censors see it differently however. |

First of all i don't believe that Anime was intended to a PG Audience (Ghost in the Shell is a MA Show).
Second of all, there are some anime that are kid friendly, but anime is generally pointed to an older audience, even the manga is as well. So to sum it all up there are anime that is consider ok, but there are that are for mature Audiences. (at least it is not hentai) |

Actually most of it is aimed at small kids to younger teenagers. They are less strict on what content can be in their kids shows than we are here in American.
|
