Well, the charges were dropped. I wanted to hear both sides but that won't happen. I wonder what those work violations are.

I hope whatever settlement they reached was fair for the victim and her family. I feel like he was wanting a settlement to do his best to protect his image and recover, but I hope the settlement makes that as hard as possible.
It's good he was fired from his position, too. |

well, whatever really happened, they needed to fire him anyway (and to find somekind of legit reason for it) , would be bad press to keep around after that headline whether or not its true

When I saw the age of the kidnapping producer, I could not help but think about the 30-year-old Boomer meme. Anyway, the guy what was coming to him and he needs to get his act together.

I didn't even read the post Just the title and I somehow seeing the words "Kidnapping" I have to assume its a high school girl or a Middle school girl that's involved, because for some odd reason that's seems to be the kinda news japan gets lately.

How do you reach a settlement in a kidnapping charge? You either did it or you didn't and if you did you can't exactly pay your way out of it or do community service. It's not like he violated a copyright law or stiffed his landlord on rent. Is kidnapping just not a major crime in Japan?

It means the charges were dropped. So the prosecutors will not be pursuing any jail time as punishment. |

That's not what he was asking. We know the charges were dropped, the article says so. We also know what that means. The question was how/why could they reach a settlement in a kidnapping case. There is no grey area to kidnapping like this. Either you did it and took the person against their will, or you didn't and they went with you willingly. The fact the article says they reached a settlement would indicate it was not voluntary because if it was there would be no need for any sort of settlement. The charges would simply be dropped and that's it. Therefore that begs the question of how do you reach a settlement in kidnapping. More importantly WHY would you settle such a case if it was clear it was in fact kidnapping. A settlement also indicates some sort of repercussions for the guy which were not mentioned. Basically there is a lot of missing info and without that info it makes the idea of settling out of court on a kidnapping charge seem very ridiculous. |

We don't really have the facts in this case. The initial report was based on what the family alleged when they went to the police. We don't know what the police found when they investigated. Without those facts all we have is speculation, most of which would be harmful.
We also do not know what constitutes "kidnapping" under Japanese law. Laws have (or should have) very specific requirements to be sustained. Those requirements are not always consistent with what the public thinks they mean. I agree that this seems very odd, but without more information further speculation is pointless. |

I find it a lot harder to believe that in the case of actual kidnapping that they'd drop the charges than to believe what I'm saying is false. |
